Oil-Painting by Jean Thomas (1923- 2019): `A Religious Life: Tower of Babel`

Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his works as early as 1946. Following in the footsteps of the great painters of modernity, his early paintings echo Thomass biggest influences, namely Fernand Léger and Matisse. Some articles published about him discuss the assertion of a true artistic personality, comparing him to his contemporaries: Bernard Buffet, Aizpiri, Krol, Martinet, Patrix etc. From 1955 onwards, Jean Thomas focused primarily on landscape painting, through a precise study of light and great pictorial mastery. His works bear witness to a trend: the realistic post-war landscapes. As a professional painter, he exhibited his works on numerous occasions, most notably at the Art Gallery of Place Beauvau and at the Tournelle Gallery in Paris. In total, he participated in over a hundred exhibitions in France and abroad.Enclosed in a white frame, this painting was completed by Jean Thomas on the 9th of April 2001. Arthur UNGER (1932- )Crafted through the intricate process of flame-painting on copper, this piece showcases an explosion of vibrant colors, from rich copper tones to iridescent pinks and greens. The unique patterns and textures are the result of intense heat transforming the metal, creating a one-of-a-kind work of art that cannot be replicated.This piece is sold without a frame.BiographyArthur Unger was born in 1932 in the city of Hespérange, Luxembourg.After graduting, he follows administration and management courses in Bruxelles, and then settle in Belgian Congo, where he had lived for 5 years, and specially with the tribes Lunda and Baluba. This long African journey is very important for the development of Arthur’s art.In 1963, back to Europe, he settles in Paris. There, he discovers the artistic life of the French Capital and makes his first drawings and gouaches.In 1968, he came back to Luxembourg, and invents a technique of drawing with Inidian Ink, and a painting technique uppon brass, using electrolytic cupper which became his favourite medium (he calls his new technique « pyrochemograms uppon cupper »).In 1970, he meets Michel Tapié ; it is a major event in the artistic life of Arthur. Tapié is very interested in Arthur’s work and writes the forewords of all the exhibitions by Arthur Unger in France and in the world. In 1980, Michel Tapié dedicated a monograph to Arthur Unger at the Galerie Sources in Paris.The personal exhibitions of the works of Arthur Unger mainly take place in France, in Luxembourg, in Germany and in Switzerland (three times at the Basel Art Fair).

A large pair of classic vases distinguished by their “oxblood” color: a deep, rich red that lends great presence to this highly decorative pair.These vases are amphora-shaped, with a glossy dark red glaze contrasting with the gilded bronze mounts. The handles and base of each vase are in chased ormolu, with elegant scrolled acanthus leaf decoration for the handles.This pair of large, highly decorative vases will complete a classic ensemble on a chest of drawers or mantelpiece.Sang Boeuf (also spelled “Sanggam” or “Sang Bao”) is a characteristic red hue that was commonly used in 19th-century Chinese ceramics, particularly vases. The name “Sang Boeuf” is derived from the French word for “blood” and refers to the deep, rich color of the glaze. Sang Boeuf color is achieved by using a specific type of iron-rich clay and a high-temperature firing process. The resulting glaze has a deep, lustrous sheen.
