SWISS ENAMEL TOBACCO BOX IN 14K GOLD WITH MINIATURE, GENEVA, 19TH CENTURY
A rare octagonal tobacco box crafted from 14K gold, created in the second half of the 19th century in Geneva, in the workshop of Pierre Girard. This piece exemplifies high-level jewellery craftsmanship, combining miniature enamel painting, guilloché engraving, and refined ornamental detail. The central element of the hinged lid features an enamel miniature depicting a romantic scene in the gallant style. The composition is finely rendered and enclosed within an oval frame of opaque sky-blue enamel, adorned with neoclassical floral motifs. The sides of the case are decorated with a guilloché pattern beneath translucent enamel, enhanced with white enamel ribbon-like waves. The base is designed with alternating vertical segments of white and blue enamel, emphasizing the symmetry and architectural structure of the form. The tobacco box reflects the harmony of proportion and technical perfection characteristic of the Geneva school. A ceremonial pair of silver seven-light candelabra executed in the spirit of Historicism with a clear reference to Baroque forms and proportions. The composition is distinguished by a monumental silhouette, rich sculptural modeling and balanced architectural structure. The massive shaped bases, decorated with volutes and acanthus motifs, support tall baluster stems rising into an elaborate branched crown with gracefully curved S-shaped arms. The relief ornament enhances the play of light across the polished silver surface. Such pieces were conceived for grand interiors of the fin de siècle period.Hallmarks: Maker’s mark of an Italian silver workshop in the form of a hexagonal shield, a traditional type of workshop mark used in Northern Italy at the end of the 19th – early 20th century. Italian state assay mark indicating silver fineness “800”.Dimensions: Height: 50 cm; Width: 43 cm; Depth: 43 cm.Weight: Total weight of the pair: 1,780 g.Condition: Good. Even, attractive patina. An exquisite gold snuffbox of rectangular form with rounded corners, executed in the tradition of the Geneva school of enamel art in the first third of the 19th century. The hinged cover is adorned with a finely painted polychrome enamel miniature depicting Sainte Anne Trinitaire - Saint Anne, the Madonna with the Christ Child, and four angels. The composition follows Western European iconography representing Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, symbolizing three generations of Christ’s lineage.The enamel plaque is framed within an elaborate three-color gold border composed of garlands of flowers, buds and foliage in yellow, pink and white gold, accented with refined cobalt enamel lines. The sides of the box are decorated with floral ornamentation combined with deep cobalt enamel panels. The reverse features a guilloché ground surrounded by a vegetal frame with rounded corners, enriched with bi-color gold ornament and cobalt enamel. The interior is mirror polished, reflecting the exceptional level of craftsmanship.Based on stylistic analysis of the miniature and the goldwork, the piece may be attributed to the circle of Geneva masters working for the French export market during the Restoration period. The attribution to Johann Daniel Berneaud (1773 - 1861) is based on stylistic parallels and requires further comparative research.Hallmarks: French import guarantee mark for 14K gold - letter “a” within a scallop shell, confirming assay control upon import into France.Material: 14K gold, polychrome painted enamel on gold, guilloché.Dimensions: 9 x 6.3 x 2 cm.Weight: 173.6 g.Condition: Good condition. Minor signs of age-related wear. Enamel miniature without losses or cracks. Hinge functioning properly.Provenance: Private collection.
