A very pleasing Ciwara crest, singularly small and accompanied by its original headdress, depicting a stylized antelope leaning on a pangolin. The antelope is ridden by a woman, and white horsehair has been added to the tips of the horns. The piece is carefully sculpted, with notches decorating the bodies of the antelope and the pangolin.Rattan, plant fiber, cowries, wood Very fine velvety mat patina, Circa 1950An animal called Ciwara is said to have taught the Bambara how to cultivate the land, and during agrarian ceremonies, they recall the myth through the stylized representation of an antelope whose name ci wara means “fawn of the earth”.During these ritual ceremonies, the mask-cimier became the attribute of a costumed dancer who gave it life and speech.Worn at the top of the skull and held in place by a sort of small wickerwork cap, these crests accompanied the dancers during rituals dedicated to agricultural work.The masks would leap across the field to chase away evil spirits, revive seeds and restore vitality to crops.

This exquisite and large still life oil-on-canvas painting portrays an abundant range of food items carefully arranged on a table against a dark backdrop. At the center, a large fish rests on a red dish, surrounded by a brass container filled with white asparagus and leafy greens. To the left, a white pie sits near pieces of bread, an orange, and a knife, while to the right, a bowl of red berries is placed next to a tall goblet and a small group of fish and peeled shrimp as well as lemons and more herring.The central symbol in this painting being fish is considered a symbol of the origin of life in accordance with the traditional cosmogonic concepts of most peoples of the Earth; life originated from water. During ritual worships, fish dishes, as well as fish sacrifices were presented to all gods of the underworld and the moon goddesses of water, love and fertility.The artist of this piece uses predominantly warm colours and dramatic lighting from the right side to highlight the textures and surfaces of the items, With its very generous dimensions, measuring 152.3 in width and 112cm in height, this painting would make a fantastic and eye-catching centre piece of any luxurious and large space such as a living room or a hallway. It is dated back to early 1900.

20th Century Louis XV Style Ceremonial Commode in Marquetry and Marble Top

We present you this beautiful Louis XV-style bombe chest of drawers with two drawers and no crossbar from the early 20th century. It is adorned with rich gilded bronze decorations representing foliage motifs and soft shapes on the front and sides. The floral marquetry is showcased in cartouches on the front as well as both of its sides, with lavish bronze accents complementing it. The rest of the chest is veneered with satinwood. It is crowned with a cream-coloured marble veined with green and violet. The entire piece is veneered on an oak frame. Despite its size, it can be seamlessly integrated into an entryway, living room, or even a bedroom. This is the work of a Parisian craftsman from the Faubourg Saint Antoine, renowned for its long and storied reputation and skilled craftsmanship.
