MAHOGANY AND GILT BRONZE DISPLAY CABINET IN THE STYLE OF SORMANI FRANCE, LATE 19TH CENTURY

An elegant single-door display cabinet with lock, executed in mahogany and richly mounted with gilt bronze, represents a brilliant example of French historicism of the second half of the 19th century in the spirit of the Sormani workshop. The proportions of the elongated rectangular body with chamfered corners are distinguished by exceptional harmony and architectural refinement. The piece stands on slender cabriole legs fitted with bronze mounts that emphasize the lightness of its silhouette.The frieze is adorned with a finely chased gilt bronze garland featuring youthful satyrs carrying their inebriated companion, lending the composition playful dynamism and an allusion to 18th-century Bacchic scenes. The chamfered angles are decorated with laurel wreaths and musical grotesques. The central panel is enriched with luxuriant floral garlands tied with ribbon, suspending a bagpipe and attributes of pastoral music. The compositional nodes are accentuated with refined mascarons. Particular attention should be drawn to the delicate graphic quality of the bronze bands, the pearl-beaded molding of the panels, and the exquisite modeling of floral motifs, forming a harmonious decorative ensemble.The glazing is beveled on three sides. The interior is lined with deep red fabric and fitted with two glass shelves. The top is composed of pink marble with natural veining, enhancing the decorative effect and underscoring the status of the piece.Dimensions: 149 × 64.5 × 38.5 cm.Material: Mahogany, gilt bronze, glass, pink marble.Condition: Good. BOULLE STYLE WRITING DESK FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY

A refined cabinet writing desk in the Boulle style, executed in the finest traditions of 19th century French historicism, combining black lacquer, brass inlay, gilded bronze mounts and leather. The composition is defined by the striking contrast between the deep black ground and the intricate marquetry panels, where engraved brass forms elaborate arabesques against a red-toned lacquered background.The rectangular top is fitted with a richly coloured red leather writing surface, framed by a gilt-tooled border, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the piece. The frieze is articulated with shaped cartouches adorned with scrolling foliage, framed by moulded gilt bronze mounts. The central section is highlighted by a sculptural mascaron set within a rocaille surround, forming a pronounced decorative focal point.The cabriole legs, inspired by the Louis XV vocabulary, terminate in finely cast gilt bronze sabots. The sides are further embellished with applied figural gilt bronze mounts of remarkable modelling and chiselled detail, demonstrating a high level of Parisian bronze craftsmanship.This desk embodies the aesthetic principles of the Boulle style, rooted in the legacy of André-Charles Boulle and revived during the 19th century, particularly under the Second Empire. Conceived for a grand cabinet interior, it would have served both as a functional writing table and as a statement of cultivated taste and social standing.Dimensions: Height: 85 cm; Width: 125 cm; Depth: 70 cm.Condition: Good. Professionally restored. Surfaces stabilised; marquetry and bronze mounts preserved.

MARBLE SCULPTURE “THE BATHING VENUS” EUROPE, 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A monumental marble sculpture depicting the goddess Venus in a moment of intimate contemplation at a sacred spring. The nude figure is shown in the canonical crouching pose: one arm resting upon the bent knee, the other gracefully extended to the side, creating a refined cross-rhythm of movement. The turn of the head and the gentle inclination of the torso form a subtle interplay of volumes, emphasizing the introspective and poetic character of the image.The iconography derives from the celebrated Antique prototype of the “Bathing Venus,” known through Roman marble copies of the 2nd century BC. The 19th-century sculptor interprets the ancient canon in a refined Academic manner, paying particular attention to idealized anatomy, smooth modeling, and the delicate treatment of the marble surface. The white marble, enriched by a soft natural patina, enhances the sense of purity and timeless harmony.The figure stands upon a strict octagonal base decorated with a pearl frieze, underscoring the Neoclassical character of the work.
