An elegant French water jug created in the late nineteenth century in the refined aesthetic of the Art Nouveau movement. Combining sterling silver and finely engraved frosted glass, this exceptional object exemplifies the period`s aspiration to unite natural forms with the decorative arts.
The pear shaped body is fashioned from thick frosted glass and delicately engraved with a flowing composition of cascading waves that merge into stylised vegetal tendrils. The silver mount is conceived as a natural extension of the glass vessel: the neck is encircled by a wreath of sculpted foliage, while the elegantly curved handle evokes the supple form of a climbing stem. The hinged lid, gilded on the interior, is surmounted by a finely modelled flowering branch with an opening blossom, reinforcing the organic rhythm that defines the entire composition.
The quality of the casting, chasing and sculptural modelling reflects the highest standards of French silversmithing during the Belle Époque. Balancing practical function with refined artistic expression, the jug is a distinguished example of luxury table silver produced for the grand interiors of affluent European residences at the turn of the twentieth century.
