The abstract composition Jack of Diamonds, executed in 1968 in ink and gouache on paper, belongs to the early mature phase of Vladimir Nemukhin’s celebrated card series and reflects an intensive period in the formation of his coherent symbolic system. The work demonstrates an active stage of the artist’s plastic and conceptual exploration within the theme of card suits and their internal hierarchy, where each figure becomes a bearer of a philosophical metaphor of fate, risk and the structured game model of the world.The composition is constructed through the intersection of diagonals and directional axes, forming a dynamically fragmented figure of the Jack of Diamonds. The face is treated in a generalized manner, yet with pronounced expressive features and vivid color accents that establish the emotional center of the sheet. Intense areas of red, blue and ochre enter into a tense dialogue with the expressive black line, forming a complex rhythmic structure.Card elements and symbolic signs are integrated into the pictorial space, forming the characteristic symbolic network developed by Nemukhin. Within his artistic system, the diamond suit is often associated with impulse, energy and inner movement. A refined pair of wine ewers made of transparent cut crystal with diamond and radial cutting, mounted in artistic silver settings. The disc-shaped bodies are decorated with complex geometric cutting forming radiating star-like compositions that create a striking play of light across the crystal surface.The silver mounts display finely worked decorative plasticity. Each ewer features a shaped neck with a hinged lid, an elegant pouring spout and a curved decorative handle with volute elements. The interior and selected exterior parts of the silver mounts are gilt, creating a rich contrast with the clear crystal.Around the body runs a wide openwork silver band decorated with relief ornaments of stylized flowers and scrolling foliage. The vessels stand on circular bases with engraved decorative borders. The combination of heavy cut crystal and finely crafted silver gives the objects a ceremonial character and makes them striking elements of formal table service.Hallmarks: Silver standard mark “800”; German national silver hallmarks; production numbers “53419” and “53416”.Dimensions: Height 29 cm; width 14 cm.Weight: 862 g and 877 g. Total weight: 1739 g.Condition: Good. Minor traces of use and natural patina on the silver. Crystal without chips or cracks.Provenance: Germany, private collection.

SILVER CHAMPAGNE COOLER WITH BACCHANALIAN FRIEZE AND SATYR HEADS GERMANY, HANAU, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

A monumental silver champagne cooler executed in the tradition of German artistic silver of the Historicism period. The vessel was intended for cooling bottles of champagne and served as an important element of formal table decoration in aristocratic and bourgeois households during the second half of the nineteenth century. The artistic conception of the piece combines elements of Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles with expressive classical iconography.The body of the cooler is decorated with an elaborate relief frieze depicting a Bacchanalian procession in honor of Dionysus. The composition unfolds around the circumference of the vessel and includes nude figures of satyrs and maenads carrying cups, wreaths, baskets of fruit, and musical instruments. The dynamic poses and sculptural treatment of the figures create the impression of a continuous festive procession. The relief is executed in deep repoussé and chasing, demonstrating refined modelling and a rich play of light across the silver surface.The handles are formed as cast heads of satyrs with long horns and beards, traditional companions of the god of wine. These mascarons are integrated into the decorative program and reinforce the classical character of the design. The upper section of the vessel is encircled by garlands of oak leaves tied with ribbons and bows in the spirit of Neoclassical ornament. The lower register is enriched with cartouches, acanthus leaves, and decorative appliqués. The cooler stands on four powerful feet in the form of lion’s paws with acanthus scrolls, lending the object sculptural stability and a monumental presence.By its artistic and technical characteristics, the object belongs to the high-quality production of Hanau silver workshops, which supplied richly decorated tableware and ceremonial silver for the international market in the late nineteenth century.Marks: Silver standard mark “800”. Maker’s mark in a quatrefoil shield: an eagle above the letters “S - ★ - S”, positioned above the letter “H”. Such workshop marks are characteristic of silver produced by the workshops of Hanau (Germany) and were widely used during the second half of the nineteenth century on historicist objects intended for the international decorative silver market.Dimensions: Height: 22.5 cm; Diameter: 21 cm.Weight: 1940 g.Condition: Good collector’s condition.Provenance: Private French collection.
