A large-scale work by Fernand Albert Renault that reveals the key artistic principles of the master during his mature period. The painting demonstrates the characteristic synthesis in Renault’s oeuvre of classical compositional structure and a free, vigorous painterly manner shaped by the influence of Fauvism and the Paris School of the interwar years.At the center of the composition lies a nude couple placed within a natural coastal landscape. The male figure, treated in denser, more saturated brown and olive hues, establishes a tonal contrast and intensifies the dramatic interplay of light and shadow.For Renault, color functions as an independent expressive force. In this composition, the scarlet, emerald, and lemon accents of the draped fabrics do not merely describe objects, but rather create the emotional atmosphere of the painting. The foliage and openings of sky are resolved in free patches of pigment that evoke moving air and the pulsation of sunlight.The background scene, depicting figures subduing horses, carries particular significance. This motif recurs in Renault’s work as a symbol of vital energy and masculine initiative. Within the context of this painting, it enters into a meaningful dialogue with the intimate foreground scene, reinforcing the themes of attraction, strength, and inner impulse.Unlike academic treatments of the nude, Renault avoids cold idealization. His figures exist within the realm of color and light rather than anatomical display. Corporality is conveyed through the plastic mass of the brushstroke, where color replaces line. A ceremonial pair of silver seven-light candelabra executed in the spirit of Historicism with a clear reference to Baroque forms and proportions. The composition is distinguished by a monumental silhouette, rich sculptural modeling and balanced architectural structure. The massive shaped bases, decorated with volutes and acanthus motifs, support tall baluster stems rising into an elaborate branched crown with gracefully curved S-shaped arms. The relief ornament enhances the play of light across the polished silver surface. Such pieces were conceived for grand interiors of the fin de siècle period.Hallmarks: Maker’s mark of an Italian silver workshop in the form of a hexagonal shield, a traditional type of workshop mark used in Northern Italy at the end of the 19th – early 20th century. Italian state assay mark indicating silver fineness “800”.Dimensions: Height: 50 cm; Width: 43 cm; Depth: 43 cm.Weight: Total weight of the pair: 1,780 g.Condition: Good. Even, attractive patina. An exquisite gold snuffbox of rectangular form with rounded corners, executed in the tradition of the Geneva school of enamel art in the first third of the 19th century. The hinged cover is adorned with a finely painted polychrome enamel miniature depicting Sainte Anne Trinitaire - Saint Anne, the Madonna with the Christ Child, and four angels. The composition follows Western European iconography representing Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, symbolizing three generations of Christ’s lineage.The enamel plaque is framed within an elaborate three-color gold border composed of garlands of flowers, buds and foliage in yellow, pink and white gold, accented with refined cobalt enamel lines. The sides of the box are decorated with floral ornamentation combined with deep cobalt enamel panels. The reverse features a guilloché ground surrounded by a vegetal frame with rounded corners, enriched with bi-color gold ornament and cobalt enamel. The interior is mirror polished, reflecting the exceptional level of craftsmanship.Based on stylistic analysis of the miniature and the goldwork, the piece may be attributed to the circle of Geneva masters working for the French export market during the Restoration period. The attribution to Johann Daniel Berneaud (1773 - 1861) is based on stylistic parallels and requires further comparative research.Hallmarks: French import guarantee mark for 14K gold - letter “a” within a scallop shell, confirming assay control upon import into France.Material: 14K gold, polychrome painted enamel on gold, guilloché.Dimensions: 9 x 6.3 x 2 cm.Weight: 173.6 g.Condition: Good condition. Minor signs of age-related wear. Enamel miniature without losses or cracks. Hinge functioning properly.Provenance: Private collection.
