A rare synthesis of Orthodox iconography and Russian decorative Art Nouveau — an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker set in a vibrant polychrome enamel oklad, executed after a design by Ivan Nivinsky at the Imperial Stroganov School. The central image presents a half-length depiction of the saint in the Byzantine tradition, rendered in tempera on gesso and protected by a thin layer of mica. The icon is framed within an elaborate arched setting, adorned with floral ornamentation and stylised onion domes surmounted by miniature crosses. The entire composition forms an architectural miniature, harmoniously combining Orthodox symbolism with the swirling organic motifs of Art Nouveau: vegetal curves, starbursts, and rosettes executed in cloisonné enamel. The lower section is complemented by movable pendants and a central cross, forming a complete decorative garland. Dimensions:Overall dimensions with pendant 23 × 13 cm, Oklad dimensions 23 × 13 cm, Icon panel 5.5 × 6.5 cm. Condition:Good condition, consistent with age. Provenance:Imperial Stroganov School of Industrial Art, Moscow, Russia. An outstanding monument of Russian Northern icon painting at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, uniting the traditions of the Vologda school with a high level of silver craftsmanship. The icon represents the Most Holy Mother of God of the Orans type – “The Sign”, with the Christ Child depicted in a medallion upon Her breast. The central image is framed within a painted border and surrounded by figures of the Lord Sabaoth and Old Testament prophets holding unfolded scrolls foretelling the Incarnation.Of particular artistic significance is the repoussé silver oklad executed by the silversmith Andrian Ioakimov Klishin in 1802. The composition of the oklad is constructed in strict symmetry characteristic of early Classicism, while preserving the ornamental richness of the Baroque tradition. The vegetal ornament, garlands, cartouches and the radiant halo of the Mother of God are rendered in deep repoussé with refined detailing. Gilded elements emphasize the sacred center of the composition.The icon combines spiritual expressiveness in painting with the virtuosity of Northern Russian silver artistry, demonstrating the high artistic culture of Vologda in the early 19th century.Hallmarks: Maker’s mark “АК” in Cyrillic within a square cartouche – Andrian Ioakimov Klishin; Assay mark of the city of Vologda with the initials “ГШ” – assay master Grigory Shishkin, beneath the date “1802”; Corresponding to Postnikova-Loseva hallmark catalogue No. 310 and No. 324.Dimensions: Height – 41.5 cm; Width – 35 cm.Condition: Good. Minor traces of age on the painted surface and silver oklad. The composition is fully preserved without loss of principal elements.Provenance: Private collection.

A rare icon of the Mother of God of Umilenie, created within the Moscow icon-painting tradition of the 16th–17th century. Executed in tempera on a wooden panel, the image displays refined modelling of the faces, a noble ochre palette and delicate linear highlights characteristic of the period. The composition follows the Byzantine Eleousa type, in which the tender touching of the cheeks of the Virgin and the Christ Child conveys profound spiritual compassion and intercession.The icon is set in an authentic 17th-century Moscow oklad of exceptional craftsmanship. Produced in court and monastic workshops, it displays a sophisticated combination of cloisonné and champlevé enamels, mother-of-pearl inlays, coloured glass and applied relief elements. The rich vegetal ornament, executed with remarkable rhythm and precision, reflects the aesthetic principles of Moscow decorative art of the 17th century. The reverse retains an early silk cloth with a floral pattern, a testament to centuries of careful veneration.Dimensions: 31 × 27 cm.Condition: The icon is in good collector’s condition consistent with its age. The painted surface is well preserved with minor craquelure and slight pigment losses. The oklad shows natural age traces.Provenance: Private collection of Alfred Schønebeck (1885–1931), representative of the Great Northern Telegraph Company in Russia. Acquired by Alfred and Gerda Schønebeck in Moscow in the 1920s. Exported to Denmark in 1929 and preserved in the family collection ever since.
