SILVER CABINET FIGURE OF A KNIGHT GERMANY, HANAU, LATE 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURY
SILVER CABINET FIGURE OF A KNIGHT GERMANY, HANAU, LATE 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURY
A silver cabinet figure of a knight in full armour, executed in the tradition of German Historicism. The sculpture depicts an armed warrior holding a sword and shield, standing on a polygonal decorative base. The figure is distinguished by the meticulous modelling of the armour, richly adorned with relief ornament, engraved elements and heraldic motifs. Parts of the armour are highlighted with light gilding, creating a refined play of light and shadow and enhancing the sculptural articulation of the composition.Particular expressiveness is given to the figure by the knight’s face carved from ivory. This technique is characteristic of German cabinet sculpture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and creates a subtle polychrome effect that animates the sculptural image. The helmet is crowned with a decorative plume, the shield is decorated with heraldic fleurs-de-lis, and the posture of the figure follows a calm ceremonial stance typical of historic interpretations of the knightly theme in decorative arts. The base is conceived as an architectural plinth with relief ornamental panels and cartouches. At the corners of the base are small figures of fantastic animals that reinforce the Neo-Renaissance character of the composition. In its stylistic conception and iconography, the figure refers to the celebrated bronze sculptures surrounding the cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I in the Hofkirche in Innsbruck, which became an important source of inspiration for decorative sculpture and silverwork at the turn of the 20th century.Hallmarks: Maker’s monogram “EFES”; German national silver hallmarks – crescent moon and crown; standard mark “800”.Dimensions: Height 30 cm.Weight: 903 g.Condition: Good. SALT CELLAR IN THE FORM OF A THRONE BY THE SAZIKOV FIRM RUSSIA, SAINT PETERSBURG, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
SALT CELLAR IN THE FORM OF A THRONE BY THE SAZIKOV FIRM RUSSIA, SAINT PETERSBURG, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
An elegant silver salt cellar executed by the renowned Saint Petersburg firm Sazikov represents a characteristic example of Russian artistic silver of the Historicism period. The object is conceived in the form of a miniature throne with a high shaped back, a stepped base, and a hinged front panel opening to reveal the inner compartment for salt. Such interpretation of a utilitarian object as a throne-like architectural form imparts a ceremonial, almost reliquary character and reflects the стремление of Russian silversmiths of the second half of the 19th century to create works imbued with a pronounced national-historical imagery. The surface is decorated with fine engraving and chased geometric and cross-shaped ornaments associated with the decorative system of the Russian style. The upper section of the back features vertical openwork apertures framed by строгие ornamental motifs. The combination of architectural composition, archaizing ornament and expressive plasticity makes this salt cellar a vivid example of the Russian national-romantic line in decorative arts. Such objects were created not only as tableware but also as камерные artistic images intended for a cultivated collector and for an environment receptive to ideas of historical memory and the aesthetics of Old Russia.Marks: Under the double-headed eagle - “Sazikov”; assay mark “84”; Saint Petersburg city mark - anchor.Dimensions: Height: 5 cm.Weight: 81 g.Condition: Good. Gilding even. Minor surface wear and light traces of use consistent with age. Structure preserved.Provenance: Private collection.

ASH TRAY “WAR 1914” BY THE FABERGÉ FIRM RUSSIA, 1914–1915
A small circular copper ashtray, executed in stamped technique, featuring a relief depiction of the double-headed eagle - the state emblem of the Russian Empire. The central medallion presents a finely modelled composition with a crowned eagle holding a sceptre and orb, emphasizing the official and symbolic character of the object.Along the perimeter of the medallion are the inscriptions “WAR 1914” and “K. FABERGÉ”, indicating the commemorative purpose of the piece and its association with the name of the Imperial Court supplier. The typographic composition is harmoniously integrated into the relief, enhancing the decorative impact of the object. The form of the ashtray is restrained and functional: a shallow bowl with a gently profiled rim and a concentric layout that draws attention to the central motif. The warm tone of the copper accentuates the depth of the relief and lends the object a distinctive visual presence. The use of stamping technique reflects serial production, characteristic of utilitarian and commemorative items produced during wartime.Objects of this type belong to a group of commemorative and functional items produced during the First World War, when the firm of Carl Fabergé, alongside its renowned jeweled creations, also manufactured objects in base metals intended for the army and for charitable purposes.Marks: Relief inscriptions “WAR 1914” and “K. FABERGÉ”Dimensions: Height: 2.5 cm; Diameter: 11 cmCondition: Good. Minor surface wear, even patina, no deformations
