Hand-cut Baccarat crystal centerpiece mounted on chiseled gilt bronze serving as a bowl or fruit stand. This majestic piece features a large Baccarat crystal bowl topped with a long cornet vase (43 cm) which makes it spectacular.The base rests on four claw feet and consists of a domed half-sphere in cut crystal intersected by the foot of the bowl. This section is equally ornate as it consists of a very finely chiseled bronze structure supporting the rim of the basin, from which two large, scalloped handles adorned with interlacing foliage and a pendant representing a laurel crown extend.The chiseling and gilding of the bronze are particularly elegant in this piece. In the 19th century, such pieces were usually found on the beautiful tables of European aristocracy, serving as a ceremonial bowl or fruit stand. A very pleasing Ciwara crest, singularly small and accompanied by its original headdress, depicting a stylized antelope leaning on a pangolin. The antelope is ridden by a woman, and white horsehair has been added to the tips of the horns. The piece is carefully sculpted, with notches decorating the bodies of the antelope and the pangolin.Rattan, plant fiber, cowries, wood Very fine velvety mat patina, Circa 1950An animal called Ciwara is said to have taught the Bambara how to cultivate the land, and during agrarian ceremonies, they recall the myth through the stylized representation of an antelope whose name ci wara means “fawn of the earth”.During these ritual ceremonies, the mask-cimier became the attribute of a costumed dancer who gave it life and speech.Worn at the top of the skull and held in place by a sort of small wickerwork cap, these crests accompanied the dancers during rituals dedicated to agricultural work.The masks would leap across the field to chase away evil spirits, revive seeds and restore vitality to crops.

This porcelain painting in the KPM style dates from the 19th century, and depicts the famous painting Madame Vigée Le Brun and her daughter by French painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1789.This self-portrait was painted for Charles Claude Flahaut de La Billarderie, comte dAngiviller, director of the kings buildings.Seized during the French Revolution, the work is now housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.The very affectionate embrace between mother and daughter is perfectly faithful to the original work, and from a technical point of view, the colors, shading and finesse of the line are remarkable.A charming, old-fashioned object, easy to place at home in a bookcase, on a dressing table or to add charm to a lost space!
