BOULLE STYLE WRITING DESK FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY

A refined cabinet writing desk in the Boulle style, executed in the finest traditions of 19th century French historicism, combining black lacquer, brass inlay, gilded bronze mounts and leather. The composition is defined by the striking contrast between the deep black ground and the intricate marquetry panels, where engraved brass forms elaborate arabesques against a red-toned lacquered background.The rectangular top is fitted with a richly coloured red leather writing surface, framed by a gilt-tooled border, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the piece. The frieze is articulated with shaped cartouches adorned with scrolling foliage, framed by moulded gilt bronze mounts. The central section is highlighted by a sculptural mascaron set within a rocaille surround, forming a pronounced decorative focal point.The cabriole legs, inspired by the Louis XV vocabulary, terminate in finely cast gilt bronze sabots. The sides are further embellished with applied figural gilt bronze mounts of remarkable modelling and chiselled detail, demonstrating a high level of Parisian bronze craftsmanship.This desk embodies the aesthetic principles of the Boulle style, rooted in the legacy of André-Charles Boulle and revived during the 19th century, particularly under the Second Empire. Conceived for a grand cabinet interior, it would have served both as a functional writing table and as a statement of cultivated taste and social standing.Dimensions: Height: 85 cm; Width: 125 cm; Depth: 70 cm.Condition: Good. Professionally restored. Surfaces stabilised; marquetry and bronze mounts preserved.

MARBLE SCULPTURE “THE BATHING VENUS” EUROPE, 19TH - EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A monumental marble sculpture depicting the goddess Venus in a moment of intimate contemplation at a sacred spring. The nude figure is shown in the canonical crouching pose: one arm resting upon the bent knee, the other gracefully extended to the side, creating a refined cross-rhythm of movement. The turn of the head and the gentle inclination of the torso form a subtle interplay of volumes, emphasizing the introspective and poetic character of the image.The iconography derives from the celebrated Antique prototype of the “Bathing Venus,” known through Roman marble copies of the 2nd century BC. The 19th-century sculptor interprets the ancient canon in a refined Academic manner, paying particular attention to idealized anatomy, smooth modeling, and the delicate treatment of the marble surface. The white marble, enriched by a soft natural patina, enhances the sense of purity and timeless harmony.The figure stands upon a strict octagonal base decorated with a pearl frieze, underscoring the Neoclassical character of the work. GILT-BRONZE CHANDELIER IN THE NAPOLEON III STYLE FRANCE, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY

A monumental French gilt-bronze chandelier executed in the Napoleon III style, embodying the refined eclecticism of the Second Empire. The composition is structured around a powerful central stem lavishly adorned with rocaille scrolls, acanthus leaves and sculptural ornamentation. From the body extend elegantly curved arms forming ten light points.Each arm terminates in a frosted glass shade shaped as an open lily flower. The softness of the glass contrasts with the dynamic brilliance of the gilt bronze, achieving a refined decorative balance. The central section is enriched with sculptural winged griffins, traditional symbols of strength and protection. The lower register is further embellished with figures of putti, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the ensemble.The upper section is crowned by a vivid cobalt-blue sphere decorated with applied gilt stars and an ornamental band. Above rises a radiant sunburst finial, lending the composition an allegorical and triumphal presence. Electrified and fully functional.Marks: None observed.Dimensions: Height 123 cm; diameter 88 cm.Condition: Good. Even gilding with minor signs of age and natural patina. No structural deformations or losses.Provenance: France, private collection.
