A luxurious silver champagne cooler, executed in finely chased and stamped decoration, represents an expressive example of ceremonial tableware of the Historicism period, incorporating elements of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. The oval body with a subtle conical taper is articulated by vertical fluting, emphasizing the architectural clarity and elegance of the silhouette.The central cartouches are adorned with elaborate foliate ornament composed of acanthus scrolls and shell motifs. Beneath the rim runs a relief frieze with a Rocaille pattern. Particularly striking are the massive cast handles in the form of fantastical dragons with outstretched wings, curved necks, and finely modeled heads. The sculptural plasticity of the handles contrasts with the smooth polished surfaces of the body, creating a dynamic play of light across the silver.The base is profiled and enriched with engraved ornament, providing both visual balance and structural stability. The object was intended for cooling champagne bottles in ice and served as an essential element of formal table settings among the upper classes and aristocratic receptions.Marks: Require clarification following visual inspection and expert examination.Dimensions: Height 21.5 cm.Weight: 1380 g.Condition: Good. A sculptural figure of a knight in full armour, executed in silver in the tradition of early twentieth century Historicism. The composition depicts a standing knight of the late Medieval period, clad in richly decorated plate armour engraved with ornamental motifs. In his right hand the figure holds a long sword, while the left hand supports a shield with a relief representation of a knight. The pose is solemn and static, emphasizing the monumental character of the composition and its decorative function.The surface of the armour is carefully worked and enriched with elaborate vegetal ornament executed in engraving and repoussé techniques. The breastplate, belt and protective elements of the armour are decorated with complex ornamental patterns creating a textured metallic surface. The helmet is crowned with a decorative plume, while selected details of the armour are highlighted with partial gilding.Particular expressiveness is achieved through the face carved in ivory, creating a striking contrast with the cool sheen of the silver armour. The figure stands on a substantial architectural base decorated with relief panels depicting historical scenes and small sculptural figures at the corners. The pedestal features a complex composition with oval medallions and ornamental friezes executed in repoussé.The stylistic language of the sculpture draws inspiration from the European sculptural tradition of the Renaissance and the late Medieval period. Works of this type represent a characteristic example of decorative silver produced by the workshops of Hanau, renowned for their mastery in historicist sculpture and objects of high artistic quality.Marks: German national silver mark with crescent and crown; fineness mark “800”; maker’s mark “JK” with a swan, workshop of J. An elegant cabinet figure executed by the German silversmithing firm Kurz J. & Co in Hanau at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, representing a characteristic example of historicist silverwork of this period.The figure depicts Elisabeth of Burgundy in ceremonial court attire with a crown and sceptre, symbols of her dynastic status. The sculpture is distinguished by the carefully modeled drapery of the garments and a complex system of ornamental decoration executed in chased and finely engraved techniques. The silver surface is treated with particular attention to the texture of fabrics and decorative borders, typical of high-quality productions of the Hanau silversmith workshops. The face and hands are carved in ivory, creating a striking contrast of materials and enhancing the sculptural expressiveness of the figure.The work reflects a well-established tradition among the silversmiths of Hanau at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century of drawing upon the iconography of European monumental sculpture and historical prototypes of the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Monumental memorial figures were thus translated into the format of cabinet-scale decorative sculpture intended for collectors’ interiors and cabinets of curiosities. In such works the monumental programs of historic monuments are reinterpreted through the medium of artistic silverwork, with particular attention devoted to the detailed rendering of historical costume, elaborate ornamental decoration and the architectural composition of the base, giving the sculpture the character of a miniature memorial monument.Marks: Maker’s mark of the workshop Kurz J. & Co, Hanau; German national silver hallmarks - crescent and crown, introduced after the establishment of the imperial hallmarking system in 1884; fineness mark “800”, indicating standard German silver of 800/1000 purity.Dimensions: Height 41.5 cm.Weight: 2041 g.Condition: Good collector’s condition.Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.Expert Report: Dr Daniel Suebsman, 2025.
