The lyrical landscape In the Park, executed by Anna Petrovna Ostroumova-Lebedeva circa 1900, belongs to the early period of her independent artistic development, when the artist signed her works as “A. Ostroumova”. This intimate watercolor reveals the master’s refined sense of spatial construction and the rhythmic organization of natural forms.The composition unfolds through a sequence of horizontal planes: the calm surface of a pond in the foreground, gently modelled lawns and a group of dark fir trees at the centre, beyond which emerges the golden-ochre foliage of an autumn park. The sky is rendered with broad transparent washes of blue and greyish tones, creating a sensation of humid air and atmospheric depth. The palette demonstrates a subtle harmony of greens, ochres and blues characteristic of the St Petersburg graphic school of the early 20th century.The work reflects the influence of European Art Nouveau and the pictorial explorations of the fin de siècle, as well as the artist’s academic training under Vasily Maté, Ilya Repin and Pavel Chistyakov. The portrait Russian Beauty is attributed to Timofey Mikhailovich Matveev (1856–1897) and dated 1888, exemplifying the academic painting tradition of late 19th-century Russia. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Matveev turned to the rare Russian genre of the female nude, elevating it from a classroom exercise to an independent artistic statement.The composition is restrained: the young woman is set against a dark neutral background, emphasizing the plasticity of her body and the psychological expressiveness of her gaze. Above her head, a subtle highlight suggests an allusion to the halo familiar in Russian iconography, transforming the figure into a hymn to feminine purity. At the same time, this effect may be interpreted as Matveev’s fascination with mythology and the European tradition of depicting Venus.The rarity of nude subjects in 19th-century Russian painting lends this work exceptional significance. The strict academic system and prevailing moral codes rarely permitted such images beyond the walls of the Academy. The present work, bearing Matveev’s signature and the date “T.M. A poetic and rare sheet from the flourishing period of Pavel Kuznetsov’s Symbolist painting, belonging to his celebrated “Steppe Cycle” of the 1910s. The composition is structured through broad horizontals, where the vault of the sky dominates the pictorial space and dissolves into subtle transitions of azure, lilac-pink and pearlescent tones. The low horizon, with barely indicated outlines of shepherds’ huts and rounded haystacks, evokes the boundless steppe and a contemplative stillness.The chromatic structure of the work is based on a refined contrast between cool celestial planes and warm ochre-golden expanses of land. The soft tempera technique on cardboard lends the surface a velvety texture and an inner luminosity characteristic of the artist’s works of this period. The laconic treatment of form and the generalized silhouette enhance the Symbolist nature of the image, in which a real motif is transformed into a poetic vision of space.The work is signed and dated on the reverse in ink: “Koshary.
