An elegant silver sculptural composition depicting a harlequin standing on a barrel and holding a woven basket. The figure is conceived in the spirit of the theatrical commedia dell’arte, combining lively genre character with the decorative inventiveness of late Historicism. The character is dressed in a typical stage costume with relief buttons and a pointed cap. The surface of the costume is enriched with cabochon inserts of turquoise and colored glass, creating a vivid decorative effect and emphasizing the stylization after Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance models.The sculpture is distinguished by expressive facial features, confident modeling of drapery, and refined detailing. The base is designed as a barrel with an imitation of wooden staves and metal hoops, enhancing the theatrical and narrative quality of the composition. Such works are characteristic of Hanau silver workshops of the second half of the 19th century, which gained international recognition for their virtuoso reproductions and free historical interpretations of Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo forms. In Hanau, a distinct school of decorative silver developed, combining technical mastery, artistic imagination, and a collector-driven interest in historical styles.Hallmarks: Maker’s mark “G.R.” under a crown - Georg Roth & Co., Hanau; additional stylized maker’s mark; assay marks in the tradition of Hanau workshops. A sculptural figure of a knight in full armour, executed in silver in the tradition of early twentieth century Historicism. The composition depicts a standing knight of the late Medieval period, clad in richly decorated plate armour engraved with ornamental motifs. In his right hand the figure holds a long sword, while the left hand supports a shield with a relief representation of a knight. The pose is solemn and static, emphasizing the monumental character of the composition and its decorative function.The surface of the armour is carefully worked and enriched with elaborate vegetal ornament executed in engraving and repoussé techniques. The breastplate, belt and protective elements of the armour are decorated with complex ornamental patterns creating a textured metallic surface. The helmet is crowned with a decorative plume, while selected details of the armour are highlighted with partial gilding.Particular expressiveness is achieved through the face carved in ivory, creating a striking contrast with the cool sheen of the silver armour. The figure stands on a substantial architectural base decorated with relief panels depicting historical scenes and small sculptural figures at the corners. The pedestal features a complex composition with oval medallions and ornamental friezes executed in repoussé.The stylistic language of the sculpture draws inspiration from the European sculptural tradition of the Renaissance and the late Medieval period. A silver cabinet figure of a knight in full armour, executed in the tradition of German Historicism. The sculpture depicts an armed warrior holding a sword and shield, standing on a polygonal decorative base. The figure is distinguished by the meticulous modelling of the armour, richly adorned with relief ornament, engraved elements and heraldic motifs. Parts of the armour are highlighted with light gilding, creating a refined play of light and shadow and enhancing the sculptural articulation of the composition.Particular expressiveness is given to the figure by the knight’s face carved from ivory. This technique is characteristic of German cabinet sculpture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and creates a subtle polychrome effect that animates the sculptural image. The helmet is crowned with a decorative plume, the shield is decorated with heraldic fleurs-de-lis, and the posture of the figure follows a calm ceremonial stance typical of historic interpretations of the knightly theme in decorative arts.The base is conceived as an architectural plinth with relief ornamental panels and cartouches. At the corners of the base are small figures of fantastic animals that reinforce the Neo-Renaissance character of the composition.
