MAGNIFICENT PAIR OF CRYSTAL TAZZAS ON SILVER STANDS. BRATYA GRACHEVY FIRM RUSSIA, SAINT PETERSBURG, LATE 19TH CENTURY

An exceptional museum-quality pair of ceremonial tazzas, created in the workshop of the Bratya Grachevy firm, official Purveyors to the Imperial Court, and reflecting the highest achievements of Russian jewellery and silversmithing art of the late nineteenth century.The composition is built on a striking contrast between the massive cut-crystal bowls and the sculptural silver stands, formed as stylised dolphins. The figures are rendered in dynamic movement, with finely chased scales and expressively modelled heads and fins. The dolphins’ tails support shell-shaped elements that form a refined transition between the stands and the bowls, lending the ensemble a harmonious and sculpturally unified silhouette.Each stand rests on three twisted branches adorned with relief foliage, enhancing the organic quality and decorative richness of the design. The crystal bowls are executed in deep cut techniques, featuring star-shaped rosettes and geometric patterns that create a rich play of light and emphasise the ceremonial character of the objects.Marks: Full maker’s mark “BR. GRACHEVY” with the double-headed eagle, characteristic of the Bratya Grachevy firm, Purveyors to the Imperial Court; state assay mark of the Saint Petersburg Assay Office with the “84” silver standard in an oval cartouche; assay mark with the coat of arms of Saint Petersburg, corresponding to the period of the late 1880s to early 1890s.Dimensions: Height: 23 cm and 25.5 cm (including crystal bowls). CAUCASIAN SHASHKA WITH GILT SILVER AND BONE DECORATION RUSSIA, 19TH CENTURY

A ceremonial Caucasian shashka executed in the traditions of the North Caucasian arms workshops of the second half of the 19th century. The piece represents a distinguished example of edged weaponry of the Russian Empire, combining martial functionality with refined metal craftsmanship characteristic of Dagestan and related regional centres.The blade is steel, single-edged and moderately curved, with fullers providing both structural strength and lightness. The surface is free of etched ornament, bearing engraving on one side only. Its geometry corresponds to the classical Caucasian shashka type, designed for powerful cutting strokes with extended draw, distinguishing it from European sabres.The hilt is without a guard and features the characteristic “goose-neck” pommel. The grip scales are made of bone and secured with gilt silver mounts. The silver elements are decorated with niello ornament and stylised vegetal motifs, executed in traditional engraving filled with blackened alloy. The contrast between gilt silver, deep niello and light bone creates a striking decorative effect and emphasises the ceremonial nature of the weapon.The scabbard is wooden, leather-covered, and fitted with richly decorated gilt silver mounts. The ornamental system is structured around repeating medallions and stylised vegetal motifs typical of 19th-century Caucasian metalwork. Suspension rings for a sword belt are present. The construction corresponds to the Cossack method of wear adopted after the official inclusion of the shashka into the armament of the Russian Army.The artistic quality of execution, together with the use of gilt silver and bone inlay, suggests a ceremonial or officer’s weapon intended not only for service but also for the display of social rank.Marks: No marks observed on the visible elements.Dimensions: Overall length - 104 cm; Width - 9 cm.Condition: Good. Natural patina to the silver mounts, minor traces of age and light surface scratches to the blade. Decorative elements preserved.Provenance: Private collection.

An expressive, one-piece porcelain figure of a lapdog, created at the Meissen manufactory in the second half of the 19th century. The small decorative dog is portrayed seated on its hind legs, with a tilted head, large protruding eyes, and richly modelled curls of fur. The coloration in white and reddish-brown tones accentuates the realistic texture and volume. The figure bears a sentimental and almost portrait-like character, designed to adorn the intimate interiors of bourgeois homes. This sculpture belongs to Meissens classical animal genre, inspired by the traditions of Johann Joachim Kändler.Marks: Blue crossed swords underglaze (Meissen), impressed model number 2880 on the base, moulding marks and kiln vent hole.Dimensions: 23 × 29 × 12 cmCondition: In good condition. No visible losses, with minor signs of age. Clear marks, preserved glaze.Provenance: From a private European collection. An original Meissen work, Germany, 19th century.
