SILVER KOVSH WITH ENAMELS AND GARNETS BY THE FIRM OF PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV RUSSIA, MOSCOW, TURN OF THE 19TH–20TH CENTURIES
SILVER KOVSH WITH ENAMELS AND GARNETS BY THE FIRM OF PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV RUSSIA, MOSCOW, TURN OF THE 19TH–20TH CENTURIES
A silver kovsh produced in the workshops of the firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov, Purveyor to the Imperial Court, at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The vessel is of rounded, slightly flattened form with low sides and a clearly defined horizontal rim, fitted with an elongated horizontal handle. The body is reinforced with radial ribs, creating a clear structural rhythm and emphasizing the architectural clarity of the silhouette. A wide decorative band with a geometric carved ornament runs around the body, set with evenly spaced cabochon-cut garnets mounted in closed settings. The deep dark-red tone of the stones contrasts with the cool sheen of the silver, enhancing the jewel-like character of the piece. The interior of the kovsh is fully gilded. The handle is shaped as an elongated spatulate form and decorated with an enamelled cross featuring a hawk in the central medallion — an emblematic motif rooted in heraldic tradition. This symbol lends the object a pronounced ceremonial and status-related character, typical of presentation pieces of the late 19th century. The kovsh represents a characteristic work from the late period of the firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov, combining strict constructive form, decorative enamel and the use of natural gemstones, reflecting the artistic tendencies of Moscow silver workshops at the turn of the century.Marks: Maker’s mark beneath the double-headed eagle, “P. OVCHINNIKOV”; Russian state assay mark for silver “84” with the kokoshnik head; Assay master’s mark “IL” — Ivan Lebedkin, Moscow. The marks correspond to the period 1899–1908.Dimensions: Length 14.5 cm. Height 3.5 cm. Diameter 9 cm.Weight: 145 g.Condition: Good. Even gilding. Enamels and garnets intact. Minor signs of careful use consistent with age.Provenance: Private collection.
