Early 18th Century Dutch Landscape Painting Attributed to Théobald Michau

This wonderful oil painting on canvas portrays a vibrant Dutch landscape and is attributed to Théobald Michau (1676-1765). It is characterised by a realistic depiction of everyday rural life in a flat Dutch landscape, emphasising intricate details of the scenery and luminism in the portrayal of light effects. The atmospheric perspective creates depth and portrays the dynamic influence of changing weather conditions in the painting, due to its use of soft colours in the background, giving the illusion of depth and distance. It is presented within a modern wooden frame and dates back to the 18th century, maintaining an impeccable condition.Théobald Michau was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes and genre paintings more famous in his own time than he is today. He began his training at the age of ten in Brussels under Lucas Achtschellinck, also a landscape painter. In 1698, he became a master in the Guild of Brussels, and in 1710, he was elected as a member of the Guild of Antwerp. He is considered a follower of Flemish landscape masters of the 17th century, such as Jan Brueghel the Elder or David Teniers the Younger.

We present to you this superb pair of gilt bronze candlesticks, dating back to the early 19th century and inspired by a model designed by the renowned French goldsmith, painter, sculptor, and architect Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1759). Each supported by a broad base with a 20 cm diameter, these candlesticks are adorned with beautiful scrollwork, reminiscent of the Regency style of Louis XIV, showcasing the elegance of that era. This pair of candlesticks is distinguished by its high-quality gilding, combining both matte and glossy finishes. They measure 28 cm in height each.Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750) was a highly influential French goldsmith, sculptor, and architect of the Rococo period. Renowned for his intricate designs, he played a pivotal role in defining the aesthetic of the time. His artistic prowess extended to paintings, engravings, and interior decorations, leaving an enduring legacy in decorative arts.

Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his works as early as 1946. Following in the footsteps of the great painters of modernity, his early paintings echo Thomass biggest influences, namely Fernand Léger and Matisse. Some articles published about him discuss the assertion of a true artistic personality, comparing him to his contemporaries: Bernard Buffet, Aizpiri, Krol, Martinet, Patrix etc. From 1955 onwards, Jean Thomas focused primarily on landscape painting, through a precise study of light and great pictorial mastery. His works bear witness to a trend: the realistic post-war landscapes. As a professional painter, he exhibited his works on numerous occasions, most notably at the Art Gallery of Place Beauvau and at the Tournelle Gallery in Paris. In total, he participated in over a hundred exhibitions in France and abroad.Enclosed in a white frame, this painting was completed by Jean Thomas on the 9th of June 1984. Signed in the bottom right corner.
