ICON OF SAINT NICHOLAS THE WONDERWORKER IN CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL OKLAD, ART NOUVEAU STYLE. EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A rare synthesis of Orthodox iconography and Russian decorative Art Nouveau — an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker set in a vibrant polychrome enamel oklad, executed after a design by Ivan Nivinsky at the Imperial Stroganov School. The central image presents a half-length depiction of the saint in the Byzantine tradition, rendered in tempera on gesso and protected by a thin layer of mica. The icon is framed within an elaborate arched setting, adorned with floral ornamentation and stylised onion domes surmounted by miniature crosses. The entire composition forms an architectural miniature, harmoniously combining Orthodox symbolism with the swirling organic motifs of Art Nouveau: vegetal curves, starbursts, and rosettes executed in cloisonné enamel. The lower section is complemented by movable pendants and a central cross, forming a complete decorative garland. Dimensions:Overall dimensions with pendant 23 × 13 cm, Oklad dimensions 23 × 13 cm, Icon panel 5.5 × 6.5 cm. Condition:Good condition, consistent with age. Provenance:Imperial Stroganov School of Industrial Art, Moscow, Russia. A monumental pair of gilt bronze candelabra, each surmounted by a sculptural figure of a paradise bird with wings outstretched. The composition of each piece is structured around a central baluster richly decorated with relief ornament, rising from a multi-tiered base supported by elegantly curved feet adorned with elaborate vegetal motifs. The upper section is formed as a crown of gracefully scrolling candle arms terminating in drip pans, each embellished with elongated clear crystal pendants that enhance the play of light and impart a distinctly ceremonial character.The birds are rendered with pronounced attention to the plasticity of the plumage and the dynamism of the silhouette, aligning these works with the traditions of Russian Historicism and the romantic interpretation of natural motifs characteristic of 19th century decorative arts. The ornamental vocabulary of the bodies includes stylized foliage, fluting and medallions, typical of high-quality bronze production of the period.Dimensions: Height: 52.5 cm. Width: 32 cm. Depth: 70 cm.Condition: Good condition. The gilding is evenly preserved with a natural age-related patina and minor signs of wear consistent with use. The crystal pendants are largely intact, with possible minimal losses that do not affect the overall visual impression.Provenance: Private European collection.

NEPHRITE, ENAMEL AND SILVER MONKEY CANE HANDLE HOUSE OF FABERGÉ, JULIUS RAPPOPORT, ST PETERSBURG, 1899–1904

A rare angular cane handle, created in St Petersburg between 1899 and 1904 in the workshop of the Imperial Court supplier, the House of Fabergé. The piece was crafted by one of the firm’s leading masters — Julius Rappoport, renowned for his virtuosity in silver casting and chasing.The handle is made of deep green nephrite and adorned with a sculpted and chased silver monkey figure embracing the stone. The sculptural composition is highly detailed: the fur is rendered with expressive plasticity, and the facial features are vivid and naturalistic. The eyes are set with cabochon-cut rubies.The lower section is decorated with guilloché red enamel over silver, bordered by chased laurel leaves. A concealed screw mechanism allows secure attachment to the cane. Its angular form is characteristic of early 20th-century luxury accessories. Marks: K. Fabergé beneath the Imperial warrant, Latin initials I.P.
