Gouache Painting by Michèle Cascella (1892-1989)

Michèle Cascella was an Italian artist renowned for his post-impressionist landscape paintings. Inspired by the works of Vincent Van Gogh, Raoul Dufy, and Maurice Utrillo, Cascella employed watercolours and pastels to create vibrant hues that mirror the lush flora of the Abruzzi soil, where he was raised. He was still a teenager during his first exhibition and later encountered Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Giorgio de Chirico while living in Milan. He exhibited regularly at the Venice Biennale from 1924 until 1942, and his works are owned by major museums in Italy and Europe, including Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, and Galleria Nazionale dArte Moderna in Rome. He passed away on August 31, 1989, in Milan at the age of 96.This painting depicts a seaside scenery near Portofino, a region that was very dear to his heart.The measurements of this piece, including the frame are: 88 x 73 cm.

An 19th-century oil on canvas depicting an Italian landscape characterized by a broad view of hills and mountains in the distance and a river whose winding course stretches to the front of the painting. This background is dotted with small hamlets and villages, whose architecture can only be guessed at.In the foreground, the picture has been deliberately separated at its center by a very large tree, which divides the composition in two: on the left are the ancient ruins of an ancient temple and small human figures (two porters and a traveler on a donkey), while on the right are two high-ranking women in deep conversation and a servant who appears to be washing sheets on a stone bridge, under whose arches we can make out waterfalls.This small-format painting is full of details and references that will be interesting to decipher. This highly theatrical painting depicts a group of servants in the kitchen, two women and two men gathered around a table.The group is highlighted by a halo of light; behind them on the wall we can make out hanging knives, to the left a teapot, on the floor a large pot and a basket of vegetables, and to the right we can make out a staircase leading up to the upper floors.The scene is very lively and dynamic: smiling women busy with their daily chores are at the heart of this depiction.The seated woman holds what appears to be a newspaper in one hand and points to the right with the other, inviting her companions and the viewer to follow suit.This depiction of the working class at the end of the 18th century expresses the ideas and revolutionary winds then blowing through France.An intriguing and daring painting, as much for its subject as for its technique, with touches of vivid color contrasting with a darker background and a lovely work of chiaroscuro.This rare work will add an original touch to your collection and a French touch to your home!
