Jacques Lavigne was born in France in 1937. After a career as a geologist in North Africa, he moved to Paris in 1962. He discovered painting through Jean-Michel Meurice, one of the founders of the Supports-Surfaces group. Fascinated by Simon Hantaïs folding work, inspired by Matisses cut-outs and influenced by Jacques Villeglés lacerations, he embarked on a colorful creative process in which tearing became the primary element of construction.In 1977, he left Paris for the Luberon before settling in Antibes. His artistic output then diversified, and in 1995 he resumed his paper collage work with tears already practiced a few years earlier in Paris.Since then, he has held a series of exhibitions across France, and his works, imbued with Mediterranean blues and kinetic reflections, have won over collectors as well as those wishing to adorn their interiors with scintillating decors.Playing on the contrast between structure and color, he composes geometric shapes that create chromatic balances and abstract harmonies.Each canvas is a window onto the horizon and dreams, largely inspired by the landscapes of the French Riviera between Cannes and Monaco. Numerous works by this renowned French Riviera artist.

Portrait Of General Goethals Attributed to Gustaaf Wappers (1803-1874)

This artwork is a portrait of General Goethals, who served as the commanding officer of the Province of Antwerp during the Bourbon Restoration era. It was painted in 1826 by the renowned artist Charles Gustave, Baron Wappers who mostly signed his works with the Dutch form of his name, Gustaaf Wappers. The portrait is beautifully presented within an opulent wooden frame, gilded with authentic gold leaf in the Empire style typical of the Bourbon Restoration period. The painting has undergone careful cleaning and restoration to preserve its exquisite details and historical significance.Gustaaf Wappers (1803-1874) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and in Paris during the time when the Romantic movement with its new ideas about art and politics was astir in France. Wappers was the first Belgian artist to take advantage of this state of affairs, and his first exhibited painting, The Devotion of the Burgomaster of Leiden, appeared at the appropriate moment and had great success in the Brussels Salon in 1830, the year of the Belgian Revolution. While political, this remarkable work revolutionised the direction of Flemish painters.
