Oil-Painting by Jean Thomas (1923- 2019): `the Viaduct of Caramel`

Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his works as early as 1946. Following in the footsteps of the great painters of modernity, his early paintings echo Thomass biggest influences, namely Fernand Léger and Matisse. Some articles published about him discuss the assertion of a true artistic personality, comparing him to his contemporaries: Bernard Buffet, Aizpiri, Krol, Martinet, Patrix etc. From 1955 onwards, Jean Thomas focused primarily on landscape painting, through a precise study of light and great pictorial mastery. His works bear witness to a trend: the realistic post-war landscapes. As a professional painter, he exhibited his works on numerous occasions, most notably at the Art Gallery of Place Beauvau and at the Tournelle Gallery in Paris. In total, he participated in over a hundred exhibitions in France and abroad.Enclosed in a white frame, this painting was completed by Jean Thomas on the 9th of June 1984. This porcelain painting in the KPM style dates from the 19th century, and depicts the famous painting Madame Vigée Le Brun and her daughter by French painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1789.This self-portrait was painted for Charles Claude Flahaut de La Billarderie, comte dAngiviller, director of the kings buildings.Seized during the French Revolution, the work is now housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.The very affectionate embrace between mother and daughter is perfectly faithful to the original work, and from a technical point of view, the colors, shading and finesse of the line are remarkable.A charming, old-fashioned object, easy to place at home in a bookcase, on a dressing table or to add charm to a lost space!

This narrative-rich 18th-century painting most likely transports us to a lively hunting scene featuring noble men and women, killers and a horde of dogs hunting game.This painting offers a highly detailed composition, featuring the hunters, their horses and a steep, mountainside landscape that opens onto a deep perspective.The lord and his wife are on horseback in the foreground, and are accompanied by a number of highly detailed figures in full activity, including beaters, villagers, servants and dogs. On the right, a thatched cottage and a peasant woman look out over the scene.In the background, a village citadel rises up: the watchtower defends the entrance to the village on the side of a ravine, linked to the foreground by a narrow arched bridge, and the church steeple can be seen in the distance among the roofs of the village houses.Finally, in the last shot, a mountain landscape bathed in majestic blue and pink skies crowns this hunting scene.The framing is well mastered and dynamic: indeed, the succession of shots is remarkable, with strong narrative elements that give real depth to this vivid painting.Beautifully framed in rosewood and blackened pearwood, the painting has been cleaned, restored and mounted on canvas by our professional restoration workshop.
