SILVER KOVSH WITH ENAMELS AND GARNETS BY THE FIRM OF PAVEL OVCHINNIKOV RUSSIA, MOSCOW, TURN OF THE 19TH–20TH CENTURIES
A silver kovsh produced in the workshops of the firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov, Purveyor to the Imperial Court, at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The vessel is of rounded, slightly flattened form with low sides and a clearly defined horizontal rim, fitted with an elongated horizontal handle. The body is reinforced with radial ribs, creating a clear structural rhythm and emphasizing the architectural clarity of the silhouette. A wide decorative band with a geometric carved ornament runs around the body, set with evenly spaced cabochon-cut garnets mounted in closed settings. The deep dark-red tone of the stones contrasts with the cool sheen of the silver, enhancing the jewel-like character of the piece. The interior of the kovsh is fully gilded. The handle is shaped as an elongated spatulate form and decorated with an enamelled cross featuring a hawk in the central medallion — an emblematic motif rooted in heraldic tradition. This symbol lends the object a pronounced ceremonial and status-related character, typical of presentation pieces of the late 19th century. The kovsh represents a characteristic work from the late period of the firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov, combining strict constructive form, decorative enamel and the use of natural gemstones, reflecting the artistic tendencies of Moscow silver workshops at the turn of the century.Marks: Maker’s mark beneath the double-headed eagle, “P. OVCHINNIKOV”; Russian state assay mark for silver “84” with the kokoshnik head; Assay master’s mark “IL” — Ivan Lebedkin, Moscow. The marks correspond to the period 1899–1908.Dimensions: Length 14.5 cm. Height 3.5 cm. Diameter 9 cm.Weight: 145 g.Condition: Good. Even gilding. Enamels and garnets intact. Minor signs of careful use consistent with age.Provenance: Private collection.

SILVER TEA SET WITH CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL AND THE INSCRIPTION “PRIYATNOGO APPETITA” RUSSIA, MOSCOW, 1891
An elegant silver tea set produced in Moscow in 1891, representing a characteristic example of Russian decorative silverwork of the late 19th century. The ensemble comprises a large jam-serving spoon bearing the decorative inscription “Priyatnogo Appetita” (“Bon Appétit”), a tea strainer, and sugar tongs. All elements are crafted in 88 zolotnik silver and richly adorned with high-quality polychrome cloisonné enamel. The ornamental decoration is based on a refined combination of deep blue, turquoise, violet, and white enamels forming intricate vegetal and geometric motifs typical of the Moscow school of the late 19th century. Selected surfaces are enhanced with fire-gilding, emphasizing the decorative richness and ceremonial character of the ensemble. The inscription on the spoon carries an intimate, almost personal tone, reflecting the gift-giving traditions and tea etiquette of the period. The set is presented in its original wooden case with a fabric-lined interior precisely fitted to the contours of each object, underscoring its status as a complete and unified presentation ensemble.Marks: Maker’s mark “AK”, presumably Antip Ivanovich Kuzmichev; assay mark indicating silver fineness “88”; date mark “1891”; Moscow assay office mark.Dimensions: Vary according to each item.Weight: 183 g.Condition: Good.Provenance: Private collection.

Russian icon of the Ascension of the Lord. Moscow school 19th century
The Russian Orthodox icon Ascension of the Lord is a true masterpiece of Russian Orthodox painting of the 19th century, executed in the best traditions of the Moscow school. The plot of the icon reflects a key moment in Christian history - the Ascension of Jesus Christ, symbolizing his divine ascension and victory over the earthly world. The composition is masterfully divided into two registers filled with deep theological meaning and artistic expressiveness. The upper register depicts the Savior in a shining mandorla, ascended by angels. He sits on the throne of glory, dressed in a himation and a chiton with a characteristic combination of red and green tones, symbolizing his earthly nature and divine greatness. In the lower register, the central place is occupied by the Mother of God - the only static figure, emphasizing her spiritual presence and the inviolability of faith. On either side of it are two angels in white robes, pointing to the sky and telling the disciples the meaning of what is happening. The apostles are captured in a moment of deep thought and emotional shock: among them, one can distinguish the apostle Peter (in a blue chiton with a brown himation) and the apostle Paul (in a green tunic with a red himation). The background of the icon is gilded, which emphasizes its sacred nature. Along the upper edge is the inscription Ascension of the Lord, executed in traditional Church Slavonic cinnabar-colored font. The icon is distinguished by exceptional detailing of the faces and softness of lines, typical of the Moscow school of the 19th century. A rich palette of red, green and blue shades is used. The gilding of the halos and the background gives the icon depth and luminosity, and the finely drawn folds of the clothes emphasize the elegance of the composition. Dimensions Height - 40 cm, width - 44 cm. This image is a unique monument of the Russian icon-painting tradition of the 19th century, combining canonical strictness, the highest level of artistic execution and rare preservation. The icon is distinguished by impeccable coloring, masterful drawing of details and deep spiritual content, making it an outstanding example of Orthodox art of the 19th century.
