NEPHRITE, ENAMEL AND SILVER MONKEY CANE HANDLE HOUSE OF FABERGÉ, JULIUS RAPPOPORT, ST PETERSBURG, 1899–1904

A rare angular cane handle, created in St Petersburg between 1899 and 1904 in the workshop of the Imperial Court supplier, the House of Fabergé. The piece was crafted by one of the firm’s leading masters — Julius Rappoport, renowned for his virtuosity in silver casting and chasing.The handle is made of deep green nephrite and adorned with a sculpted and chased silver monkey figure embracing the stone. The sculptural composition is highly detailed: the fur is rendered with expressive plasticity, and the facial features are vivid and naturalistic. The eyes are set with cabochon-cut rubies.The lower section is decorated with guilloché red enamel over silver, bordered by chased laurel leaves. A concealed screw mechanism allows secure attachment to the cane. Its angular form is characteristic of early 20th-century luxury accessories. Marks: K. A naturalistic decorative figure of a langoustine crafted by Spanish silversmiths from high-grade silver. The sculpture is created using casting techniques followed by chasing and careful hand finishing that render the structure of the shell, claws and legs of the marine crustacean.The figure is distinguished by expressive plasticity and precise anatomical modelling. The segmented carapace and tail form a dynamic silhouette, while the elongated antennae and legs enhance the sense of movement. A notable feature of the piece is its articulated construction: the body is composed of linked segments and the claws are mounted on small hinges. The silver surface combines matte and polished areas, emphasizing the relief of the shell and joints.Such silver figures were traditionally used as original decorations for a fish or seafood table, continuing the European tradition of naturalistic table ornaments.Marks: Full Barcelona assay mark; silver fineness mark “915”; additional maker’s mark and model number. The Barcelona assay control system in this form was used between 1934 and 1988.Dimensions: Height: 9 cm; Width: 20 cm; Depth: 9 cm.Weight: 124 g.Condition: Good.
