SILVER FIGURE OF HARLEQUIN GERMANY, HANAU, LATE 19TH CENTURY
An elegant silver sculptural composition depicting a harlequin standing on a barrel and holding a woven basket. The figure is conceived in the spirit of the theatrical commedia dell’arte, combining lively genre character with the decorative inventiveness of late Historicism. The character is dressed in a typical stage costume with relief buttons and a pointed cap. The surface of the costume is enriched with cabochon inserts of turquoise and colored glass, creating a vivid decorative effect and emphasizing the stylization after Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance models.The sculpture is distinguished by expressive facial features, confident modeling of drapery, and refined detailing. The base is designed as a barrel with an imitation of wooden staves and metal hoops, enhancing the theatrical and narrative quality of the composition. Such works are characteristic of Hanau silver workshops of the second half of the 19th century, which gained international recognition for their virtuoso reproductions and free historical interpretations of Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo forms. In Hanau, a distinct school of decorative silver developed, combining technical mastery, artistic imagination, and a collector-driven interest in historical styles.Hallmarks: Maker’s mark “G.R.” under a crown - Georg Roth & Co., Hanau; additional stylized maker’s mark; assay marks in the tradition of Hanau workshops. The mark of Georg Roth is associated with Hanau silver production of the late 19th - early 20th century, with the мастер working within the local tradition of producing objects in historical styles.Dimensions: Height 21 cm.Weight: 340 g.Condition: Overall good condition with minor traces of age.

An exquisite silver box of rectangular form with gently rounded corners, decorated on both sides with polychrome enamel. The enamel decoration is composed of lush floral arrangements featuring fully blossomed peonies, buds, and dense foliage. The ornament is applied to both the lid and the reverse side, forming a cohesive decorative ensemble.The composition is executed in a manner characteristic of Chinese decorative art, with softly modelled petals and subtle tonal gradations. The peonies, rendered in lilac-purple and white tones with green foliage, are associated in Chinese artistic tradition with notions of honour, wealth, rank, and prosperity. In museum descriptions, they are often identified as one of the most significant auspicious motifs in Chinese decorative arts.The smooth silver side panels form a restrained frame for the enamel plaques. The hinge is neatly constructed, and the lid closes tightly. The object was intended for storing tobacco or smoking accessories and belongs to the category of Chinese export silver of the early 20th century, a period when decorative works in metal, enamel, lacquer, and porcelain were actively produced for both the domestic market and international trade.Marks: Absent or indistinct on the present example.Dimensions: Length: cm; Width: cm; Height: cm.Weight: g.Condition: Good. An elegant rectangular silver box with a hinged lid, executed in the traditions of Chinese decorative and applied arts of the early 20th century. The lid is adorned with a relief composition depicting two rabbits among grasses and a blossoming branch. The vegetal motif is enriched with polychrome enamel in soft yellow, white, and green tones, lending the scene painterly depth and refined decorative expressiveness.The subject carries an allegorical meaning. In Chinese symbolism, the rabbit is associated with the moon, longevity, and harmony, while the blossoming branch signifies spring renewal and prosperity. The composition is rendered in a sophisticated manner, emphasizing fluid lines and finely worked metal textures. The surface of the body displays a subtle satin finish with a gentle patina that highlights the age of the object.The interior is finished smoothly and intended for storing tobacco or aromatic mixtures. The piece is of particular interest as an example of export or salon silver from the late Qing or early Republican period.Marks: Chinese maker’s marks with a fineness designation “900”; additional workshop marks on the inner rim.Dimensions: Length — cm; width — cm; height — cm.Weight: g.Condition: Good.
