An expressive cityscape depicting Piazza San Marco and the western façade of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, painted by Marguerite de Lottis in 1938. The composition is conceived from a frontal viewpoint, with the rhythm of the arched portals, domes and vertical flagpoles forming a coherent decorative structure. Small staffage figures animate the square and emphasise the monumental scale of the basilica.
The painting is executed in a free and vigorous manner. The architectural forms are rendered with broad, at times impastoed brushstrokes, without an emphasis on strict topographical detail. Silvery-grey and creamy tones of the façade are enlivened by ochre, blue, deep blue and reddish accents. The artist focuses above all on the luminous atmosphere of Venice, the shimmering quality of the stone and the decorative richness of the square.
The work is presented in a gilt wooden frame with a broad passe-partout and is set under glass.
