An expressive cityscape depicting Piazza San Marco in Venice. The composition brings together the Torre dell’Orologio, the surrounding architecture of the square and a partial view of St Mark’s Basilica. The scene is animated by numerous staffage figures, forming a dynamic band of colour across the foreground.
The painting is executed in a free and energetic manner characteristic of the works of Marguerite de Lottis. The architectural forms are rendered with broad, at times impastoed brushstrokes and with deliberate simplification of detail. The light silvery-cream palette of the façades is enlivened by ochre, red, pale blue, deep blue and green accents. Particular compositional emphasis is created by the vertical flagpoles and the richly coloured procession of figures, reinforcing the lively atmosphere of the square.
The work is presented in a gilt wooden frame with a broad passe-partout and is set under glass.
