A large silver-gilt kovsh with cloisonné enamel, made in the workshop of Vasily Agafonov in Moscow between 1908 and 1917. The piece is a distinguished example of Russian decorative silver from the late Russian Art Nouveau period, combining the ornamental traditions of Old Russia with the exceptional achievements of Moscow enamelling at the beginning of the twentieth century. The traditionally boat-shaped body is richly decorated with a polychrome design of stylised flowers, scrolling stems and foliate motifs, executed in the technically demanding medium of cloisonné enamel over filigree against a deep, dark ground.

The decorative scheme extends across virtually the entire surface of the body and handle. The ornament is composed of rhythmically interlacing foliate motifs characteristic of the national-romantic current within Russian Art Nouveau. A rich palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, lilac, white and red-orange enamels creates a striking painterly effect and emphasises the virtuosity of the workmanship. Delicate silver wire cloisons form an intricate pattern, demonstrating the exceptional skill of the enameller and the high artistic standards attained by Moscow jewellery workshops of the period.

The harmonious proportions, distinctive silhouette and richness of the enamel decoration lend the piece a particularly imposing decorative presence. The interior retains traces of the original gilding, emphasising the ceremonial character of the object. Owing to its large scale and substantial weight, the kovsh belongs to the category of presentation pieces intended for affluent patrons and collectors. Such works were not merely objects of decorative art, but also expressions of status and cultural refinement, reflecting their owners` appreciation of the Russian artistic tradition.

Vasily Semyonovich Agafonov belonged to the circle of Moscow silversmiths whose activity coincided with the final flourishing of Russian artistic silver under the Imperial period. Known as a merchant of the Third Guild and proprietor of a jewellery manufactory operating in Moscow from 1893 to 1916, Agafonov headed an enterprise employing approximately eighty craftsmen and workers. Such a scale of production reflects the prominent position occupied by his workshop within the Moscow jewellery industry at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The workshops period of activity corresponded with an exceptional revival of interest in Russias artistic heritage. Within the framework of the Neo-Russian movement, Moscow jewellers drew inspiration from the decorative arts of pre-Petrine Russia, the treasures of the Kremlin workshops and the ornamental vocabulary of seventeenth-century Russian craftsmanship. Particular importance was attached to works executed in cloisonné enamel, a technique regarded as one of the most distinctive expressions of the national artistic tradition.

Among the many forms of Russian decorative silver, the kovsh held a uniquely symbolic place. Historically associated with the ceremonial culture of Muscovite Russia, by the late nineteenth century it had become an emblem of Russian national art and one of the most prestigious forms of presentation silver. Large cloisonné enamel kovshes were regularly exhibited at industrial and artistic exhibitions, acquired by prominent collectors and frequently commissioned as commemorative gifts.

The present kovsh exemplifies the defining characteristics of the Moscow enamelling school during the period 1908-1917. Its luxuriant foliate ornament, combining filigree work with richly coloured cloisonné enamel, reflects the ambition of Russian craftsmen to unite ancient decorative traditions with the refined artistic language of Art Nouveau. The complexity of execution, richness of colour and exceptional quality of workmanship place this piece among the most accomplished examples of pre-Revolutionary Russian silver.

Today, the works of Moscow enamelling workshops from the early twentieth century are regarded as the culmination of the Neo-Russian style in jewellery and decorative arts. Large enamelled kovshes created on the eve of the Revolution are represented in major museum collections and remain among the most sought-after categories of Russian decorative silver on the international art market.

Good collectors condition. Minor age-related wear, local rubbing to the silver and gilding, and small enamel losses along parts of the ornament. Marks remain clearly legible. Overall preservation is consistent with a museum-quality object from the early twentieth century.
