We will only share latest what our month on the VASILY SEMYONOVICH AGAFONOV FACTORY.
Vasily Semyonovich Agafonov was among the Moscow entrepreneurs and goldsmiths and silversmiths active at the turn of the 20th century. His factory is documented from approximately 1890 and remained in operation until 1917. By 1901, the establishment employed around 80 craftsmen and workers, reflecting its considerable scale of production.
The workshop was situated in Moscow, in Stremyanny Lane, at premises belonging to Stepneva; later records also mention an address on Zatsepa Street. The factory produced silver tableware, decorative vessels, presentation pieces and jewellery. Its products bore maker's marks with the Cyrillic initials «ВА» and «ВСА».
The factory's production included presentation and gift objects, notably silver vessels decorated with polychrome enamel. However, no documentary evidence has been established confirming that Agafonov held the title of Supplier to the Imperial Court or received awards at international exhibitions.
The factory's artistic vocabulary was shaped by the Russian Revival style and Art Nouveau. Its decorative repertoire included stylised flowers, scrolling foliage, geometric borders and motifs derived from early Russian decorative arts.
Among the principal techniques employed were cloisonné enamelling, painted enamel over filigree, gilding, chasing, casting, engraving and decorative punchwork (stippling). The combination of polychrome enamels and metal ornamentation enabled the creation of intricate decorative compositions on silver surfaces.
The factory's range included traditional Russian kovshi (drinking vessels), charki (small drinking cups), salt cellars, tea services and jewellery. Certain pieces combined traditional forms of Russian silverwork with the asymmetrical floral motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau.
Works produced by the Vasily Agafonov Factory are represented in the collection of the State Historical Museum in Moscow. Among the documented examples are:
