A monumental marine landscape depicting a tidal harbour in the evening, attributed to the Russian painter Lev Feliksovich Lagorio (1826–1905). The composition is centred on a large three-masted sailing vessel set on wooden supports within the drying zone of a small coastal shipyard.

The work derives particular expressive power from the finely observed atmosphere of sunset. The artist builds subtle transitions of golden, amber and crimson tones, suffusing the scene with a soft evening glow. The rays of the setting sun are reflected in the shallows and across the damp foreshore, enhancing the sense of depth and spatial recession. The sky occupies a substantial part of the composition and becomes its principal emotional element.

The dark hull of the vessel and the delicate linear pattern of its masts and rigging stand out with particular clarity against the luminous horizon. In the foreground, fishermen and local inhabitants are shown engaged in everyday activities around the ship. These small-scale figures emphasise the monumentality of the vessel and the breadth of the surrounding space. Shore buildings, boats and the silhouettes of smaller vessels in the distance create the impression of an active coastal harbour while preserving the overall contemplative mood of the work.

The painting is executed to a high professional standard. Particular attention is given to the construction of the vessel and rigging, the reflections of light on the damp shoreline, and the gradual dissolution of the distant planes into the atmospheric haze. The romantic expressiveness of the sunset is combined with close observation and compositional clarity characteristic of Lagorio’s marine landscapes from his European period.

The painting is presented in a gilt wooden frame dating from the late 19th century, in keeping with the historical character of the work.

Signature: Not found. The reverse of the canvas bears the stamp of the Parisian artists’ materials supplier Ange Ottoz, Paris, dating to the mid-19th century and consistent with the proposed dating of the work.

Lev Feliksovich Lagorio was among the significant representatives of the Russian landscape and marine painting tradition of the 19th century. His artistic language was formed within the academic tradition, while his European travels during the 1850s encouraged a more direct engagement with specific states of the seacoast, harbour environments and natural light. Lagorio’s work is distinguished by clarity of spatial construction, precision of drawing, refined handling of aerial perspective and a balance between Romantic expressiveness and close observation of nature.

The proposed attribution of the present work is based on a combination of stylistic, compositional and historical-technical characteristics. Among the most significant are the panoramic format, the low horizon, the balanced organisation of space, the attention paid to the tidal zone, the precise rendering of the vessel and harbour setting, and the gradual dissolution of the distant planes into a soft atmospheric haze.

A particularly important comparative reference is Lagorio’s Normandy Coast of 1859. The two works are related by their French maritime context, the motif of low tide, the prominent sailing vessel, figural staffage and evening light. The close dimensions are also noteworthy: the known work measures approximately 80 × 121.8 cm, while the present canvas measures 82 × 124.5 cm. Such similarity in scale is not in itself proof of authorship; however, combined with the subject, compositional structure and painterly handling, it constitutes an important comparative argument.

The French origin of the canvas is of additional significance. The Ange Ottoz, Paris stamp on the reverse is consistent with the European context of Lagorio’s work in the late 1850s and provides supporting evidence for the proposed dating of circa 1859. Taken together, these features allow the painting to be considered a probable work by Lev Feliksovich Lagorio.

Good condition. Pronounced age-related craquelure and minor traces of old restoration to the canvas. The canvas has been lined and reinforced. Overall preservation is consistent with the age of the work.

ROMANTICISM
The style Romanticism is an artistic movement of the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, formed in Europe and further developed in Russia as a reaction against the rationalism of the Enlightenment and the normative principles of Classicism. Romanticism is characterized by the cult of individual experience, an interest in nature, history, and the irrational, and a стремление toward inner freedom, subjective perception, and national identity.
