A rectangular cigarette case with softly rounded corners, crafted in two-colour 56 zolotnik gold, is a refined example of late 19th century jewellery art, executed in St Petersburg by the master Gabriel Nukkanen for the firm of Carl Fabergé. The surface of the case is decorated with a regular geometric pattern of engraved hexagons with radiating fluting, creating a sophisticated interplay of light between rose and yellow gold. The clear rhythmic structure of the decoration lends the object architectural precision and emphasises the refined restraint of its artistic conception.

The lid opens by means of a push-button clasp set with a natural ruby. The construction is further enriched with a diamond composition: a central diamond of approximately 0.45 carats, complemented by old-cut diamonds with a total weight of approximately 0.8 carats. Such integration of gemstones into functional elements is characteristic of Fabergé’s works, where utilitarian details are transformed into expressive decorative accents.

The interior surface is finished in a matte texture, delicately treated to emphasise the nobility of the gold and to create a soft contrast with the elaborately decorated exterior. The construction demonstrates exceptional precision, characteristic of the highest level of Fabergé production. The use of two-colour gold and strict geometric ornament reflects the artistic tendencies of late 19th century jewellery, where priority was given to rhythm, symmetry and perfection of surface treatment.

Gabriel Nukkanen was a Finnish jeweller and one of the workmasters of the firm of Carl Fabergé, active in St Petersburg during the formation of the mature artistic language of Russian jewellery at the end of the 19th century. He belonged to the group of craftsmen responsible for the practical realisation of Fabergé’s artistic programme, combining the highest level of craftsmanship with the evolving aesthetic principles of the period.

Originating from the Grand Duchy of Finland, then part of the Russian Empire, Nukkanen was among the Finnish masters who played a significant role in the development of St Petersburg’s jewellery production. Their contribution lay in the introduction of strict formal discipline, technical precision and a deep sensitivity to material, forming the foundation of the high standard associated with Fabergé.

Within the Fabergé system, a workmaster operated under his own maker’s mark while executing commissions for the firm. This structure, based on the collaboration of independent workshops under a unified artistic direction, allowed for a unique synthesis of individual craftsmanship and stylistic coherence.

Works bearing the “GN” mark are distinguished by restrained decoration, precise geometry and a refined treatment of the metal surface. They reflect a broader tendency within decorative arts of the period towards clarity of form and subtle surface articulation rather than excessive ornamentation.

Cigarette cases produced by Nukkanen for Fabergé represent a distinct category of objects in which utilitarian function is transformed into a vehicle for artistic expression. The use of two-colour gold and the integration of gemstones into structural elements demonstrate a deliberate synthesis of decorative and functional principles.

In the modern scholarly and collecting context, works by Nukkanen are regarded as important examples of the St Petersburg jewellery school of the late 19th century. They are represented in museum collections and consistently appear on the international art market, where they are valued for their authenticity, quality of execution and association with the circle of Fabergé masters.
