Ruby is the red gem variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), its colour resulting from the presence of chromium within the crystal structure. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, a vitreous lustre and excellent durability. Its colour ranges from pinkish red to intense red and purplish red. The principal factors in gemmological and market assessment are colour, clarity, carat weight, the nature of inclusions, the presence or absence of treatment, and geographic origin.
