A finely modelled Japanese bronze cabinet figure depicting a samurai archer, produced in Japan during the 19th century. The warrior is represented at the climactic moment of releasing an arrow from a large asymmetrical Japanese bow, or yumi. The dynamically conceived stance conveys physical tension, concentration and martial discipline, qualities traditionally associated with the samurai warrior class.

The sculptor has carefully rendered the characteristic elements of the warrior’s costume and equipment, including the layered armour, broad sash, traditional hairstyle and archery accoutrements. Particular attention has been paid to the modelling of the figure and the richly worked bronze surface, creating expressive contrasts of light and shadow and a compelling sense of movement.

Bronze figures of this type were produced during the Meiji period for the international market as highly accomplished works of Japanese decorative art. They formed an important category of export production among Japanese bronze workshops and were particularly admired by European collectors.

The figure represents a notable collectible example of 19th-century Japanese bronze sculpture, combining the iconography of samurai culture with the technical refinement of Japanese artistic metalwork.
