An imposing and playfully conceived silver figure of the fairy-tale character Puss in Boots, attributed to Gebrüder Gutgesell and made in Hanau circa 1900, in the highly accomplished sculptural tradition characteristic of Hanau silverwork during the Historicist period.
The cat is portrayed as a courtly majordomo, greeting his guests with a slight bow. The articulated head enhances the impression of an animated character and lends the piece a distinctly playful and theatrical quality.
The figure holds a ceremonial staff in one paw, an attribute of authority, while the gesture of the other draws attention to the elaborate tailcoat, richly embellished with coloured elements imitating buttons and decorative details on the cuffs, lapels, bow and tails. The contrast between the finely modelled texture of the fur and the smoother surfaces of the costume creates a striking interplay of textures in the silver. The humorous character of the composition is further emphasised by the defeated rodents depicted at the base, providing an ironic counterpoint to the protagonist’s ceremonious appearance. The grotesquely expressive features and stance lend the figure an almost caricatural sense of grandeur.
Its substantial scale, sophisticated construction, accomplished sculptural modelling and weight of more than two kilograms distinguish the work as an impressive example of large-scale decorative silver sculpture produced in Hanau around the turn of the twentieth century.
Hallmarks: Maker’s mark in the form of a rose blossom, corresponding to the mark associated with the Hanau silver firm Gebrüder Gutgesell, accompanied by two Historicist pseudo-marks characteristic of Hanau silver production of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, Hanau emerged as one of the most important centres of German artistic silverwork of the Historicist period. The city’s silversmithing firms and workshops became renowned for their accomplished reinterpretations of European Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo traditions. Their production ranged from elaborate ceremonial cups and decorative vessels to complex figural compositions, created for affluent collectors and an international market experiencing a renewed enthusiasm for antique silver and objects conceived in historical styles.
Among the notable Hanau silver manufacturers was Gebrüder Gutgesell, founded in 1883 by the brothers Valentin and Ferdinand Gutgesell. A distinctive feature of Hanau silver production was the use of so-called pseudo-marks: Historicist marks conceived in imitation of earlier European town, assay and maker’s marks. A rose-blossom maker’s mark is documented in association with Gebrüder Gutgesell and corresponds to one of the marks present on the present figure.
The silver figure of Puss in Boots exemplifies the late nineteenth-century taste for combining Historicism, virtuoso silver sculpture and theatrical fantasy. The celebrated fairy-tale character is transformed into a grotesque courtly figure, while the articulated head gives the sculpture the character of an ingenious mechanical objet de fantaisie. Its monumental scale, sophisticated surface modelling, humorous iconography and combination of marks support an attribution to Gebrüder Gutgesell and place the work within the tradition of Hanau silver around 1900.
