An impressive Viennese bronze vide-poche created by the renowned bronze foundry of Franz Bergman (1861 - 1936) during the 1920s-1930s. Combining sculptural virtuosity with practical function, the composition exemplifies the finest traditions of Viennese bronze production from the first third of the twentieth century.
The dynamically rearing elephant, carrying its mahout, is cast in finely patinated bronze and demonstrates the exceptional modelling for which Bergmans workshop became internationally celebrated. The sculptor masterfully captures the animals muscular tension, the naturalistic treatment of its skin folds and harness, and the dramatic sense of movement. The composition is centred around a circular bowl of polished cherry marble with a shallow recessed surface intended for calling cards, correspondence, jewellery and other small personal objects.
Its ingenious functional design further enhances the sculpture. The elephants raised trunk and projecting tusks provide convenient supports for rings, keys or key fobs, transforming the object into an elegant desk accessory. This harmonious fusion of decorative sculpture and everyday utility perfectly reflects the ideals of the Art Deco period, when Viennese designers sought to elevate functional objects into works of art.
Works produced by Franz Bergmans workshop achieved international acclaim for their superb bronze casting, meticulous hand finishing and richly nuanced patination. Today, such sculptural desk ornaments rank among the most desirable examples of Viennese bronze on the international art and antiques market.
