A refined pair of French Empire style wall sconces, executed in France during the 19th century. Cast in gilt bronze, each sconce features a harmonious symmetrical design with two gracefully scrolling candle arms terminating in stylised floral candle nozzles. The central element is formed by a finely modelled lion mascaron, from which elegant S-shaped scrolls emerge, enriched with acanthus foliage, palmettes and floral ornament. The sculptural modelling, crisp chasing and richly preserved gilded surface attest to the high standard of French bronze craftsmanship. Such wall lights formed an integral part of the decoration of formal salons, studies and aristocratic interiors, combining practical illumination with the restrained grandeur characteristic of the French Neoclassical tradition.
