An oval occasional table made in France in the late 19th century after a model by the distinguished Parisian cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler, representing a refined example of French decorative furniture in the Louis XVI style.
The carcass is constructed of wood and veneered in carefully selected mahogany. The top is of a complex, near-oval outline, with four gently rounded projections corresponding to the placement of the shaped legs. The entire surface is decorated with geometric marquetry, creating a striking contrast with the finely cast gilt-bronze border.
The edge of the top and the sides of the frieze are mounted with linear gilt-bronze ornament of notably high quality, finely cast, chased and gilded. The decorative scheme incorporates motifs traditionally associated with French Neoclassicism and interpreted in an antique manner, including ribbon and foliate ornament, floral rosettes, cornucopiae, reclining rams and female masks.
The table is raised on four elegantly shaped legs, each surmounted by gilt-bronze mounts in the form of female masks. The lower sections terminate in gilt-bronze sabots enriched with relief foliate decoration.
A drawer is concealed within the front section of the frieze and is skilfully integrated into the overall composition. Its front is embellished with gilt-bronze ornament continuing the decorative treatment of the remaining sides of the frieze, rendering the structural element almost imperceptible.
The combination of richly figured mahogany, geometric marquetry and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts lends the table considerable visual distinction and reflects the tradition of high-quality French cabinetmaking of the late 19th century.
