A monumental porcelain fruit centrepiece produced by the renowned Carl Thieme manufactory in Potschappel, Germany, during the late nineteenth century. The openwork bowl of complex scrolling form is adorned with finely moulded cartouches, floral garlands, and vividly painted bouquets inspired by the celebrated Saxon porcelain tradition. Its undulating rim is enriched with elegant scrollwork and gilded highlights, lending the composition an imposing and refined architectural presence.
The base is conceived as an elaborate sculptural group depicting allegorical figures dressed in eighteenth century costume arranged around a flowering tree. Numerous individually modelled flowers, foliage, and Rococo inspired ornamental motifs create a dynamic composition characteristic of Carl Thieme`s finest productions. Founded in Potschappel near Dresden in 1872, the Carl Thieme Porcelain Manufactory rapidly established itself among the foremost producers of high quality Saxon porcelain. Drawing inspiration from the celebrated Meissen tradition of the eighteenth century, the factory specialised in richly sculptural works reflecting the aesthetics of Rococo, Late Baroque, and French decorative art. Monumental centrepieces, candelabra, clocks, and elaborate fruit bowls supported by complex figural groups became hallmarks of the manufactory and contributed significantly to its international reputation.
The creation of such masterpieces required an exceptionally demanding production process. Individual flowers, foliage, ornamental details, and sculptural figures were modelled separately by hand, fired individually, and then meticulously assembled before being finished with finely executed polychrome painting and gilding. Consequently, even examples based upon the same model display subtle variations in modelling and decoration, making each surviving piece unique.
During the second half of the nineteenth century, these impressive decorative compositions became highly fashionable among European aristocratic households and affluent bourgeois collectors. They occupied prominent positions on ceremonial dining tables and within reception rooms, winter gardens, and grand salons, serving both as luxurious table ornaments and as symbols of refinement and social prestige. Their artistic language successfully combined the elegance of eighteenth century Saxon porcelain with the historicist taste of the nineteenth century, distinguished by theatrical sculptural compositions, exuberant ornamentation, and remarkable technical virtuosity.
Today, monumental porcelain works by Carl Thieme are represented in important museum collections and discerning private collections worldwide.
