An antique Russian icon of the Mother of God, executed in the traditions of 18th-century Russian icon painting. The composition is distinguished by its expressive arrangement, finely rendered faces, and richly ornamented gilded background and borders.
The Mother of God is depicted with her head inclined, resting her cheek upon her right hand a characteristic iconographic gesture symbolising compassion and attentiveness to the prayers of the faithful. The Christ Child is shown seated upon her lap, holding an unfurled scroll bearing a passage from the Holy Scriptures.
The icon is painted on a wooden panel with a recessed central field (kovcheg), framed by raised borders. Transverse wooden battens, intended to reinforce the panel, are visible on the reverse.
Materials and Technique: Wood panel, gesso, probably tempera, gilding, incised decoration and ornamentation over gesso.
Dimensions: 36 × 31.8 cm.
Condition: Good condition, with natural signs of age. Wear to the gilding, minor losses to the decorative surface, and age-related changes to the wooden support are visible. The painting of the faces and the principal elements of the composition remain well preserved and clearly legible.
