A small-scale oil study depicting a Caucasian horseman playing a stringed musical instrument, attributed to Franz Alexejevich Roubaud. The figure is shown on horseback against a broadly rendered mountainous landscape. The composition is executed with freedom and energy, in broad, at times impastoed brushstrokes, with minimal detail yet an exceptionally precise sense of movement and equine form.
The painted surface is structured around the contrast between the warm ochre-brown tones of the ground and the horse’s body and the cool grey-blue sky. Saturated blue, reddish-orange and green accents in the rider’s costume lend the compact composition a distinctive chromatic intensity.
The handling, the type of equestrian subject, the Caucasian theme and the freely executed study-like brushwork are characteristic of the oeuvre of Franz Alexejevich Roubaud, one of the foremost masters of Russian battle painting and Caucasian subjects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
