A large circular decorative dish in pressed opalescent glass, produced by the French manufactory Verlys. The surface is decorated with a striking relief composition depicting three butterflies with outstretched wings among stylised flowering branches, leaves and buds.
The composition is conceived in a manner characteristic of French Art Deco, combining a naturalistic subject with a clear decorative rhythm and pronounced sculptural quality. Frosted relief areas contrast with more transparent passages of glass, creating a sense of depth and a sophisticated play of light. The butterflies’ wings are modelled in broad planes with fine linear detailing and circular decorative motifs, while the surrounding floral ornament forms a richly articulated frame around the central composition.
The opalescent glass, with its bluish-milky tonal effects, moulded relief decoration and stylised treatment of natural forms, is characteristic of French decorative glass of the 1920s and 1930s.
