An exquisite watercolour depicting a maritime harbour with numerous sailing vessels and a majestic three-masted warship lying at anchor. The work displays compositional principles characteristic of Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky`s graphic oeuvre: a remarkable sense of spatial depth, a delicate rendering of the maritime atmosphere, and particular attention to the depiction of sailing ships.
The composition is structured around a striking contrast between the imposing ship of the line dominating the right-hand side and the extensive panorama of the port town unfolding to the left. The meticulously rendered masts, yards, rigging and gunports reflect Aivazovsky`s characteristic interest in the construction and detailing of naval vessels. Numerous ships, stone fortifications and architectural features of the historic harbour are visible in the distance.
The foreground is occupied by a gently sloping shoreline with a fishing boat and scattered rocks. The tranquil water is rendered through transparent watercolour washes and fine horizontal strokes, conveying an impression of absolute calm.
The work derives much of its artistic distinction from the tonal unity characteristic of Aivazovsky`s marine paintings. Subtle transitions between warm ochre and brown hues, delicate touches of bodycolour and the gradual dissolution of distant forms into atmospheric haze create a compelling impression of light and space.
The watercolour is presented under glass in a broad, moulded wooden frame with a light-coloured mount.
