An analogous image of St. Nicholas is presented in classical iconography, with Christ and the Mother of God in medallions that bestow the Bible and insignia of episcopal power. According to legend, Nicholas was imprisoned for a dispute with heretics about the faith. At night, Jesus and Mary appeared to him - they released him, and gave him the signs of true faith and spiritual authority.
