Rare Russian silver salt cellar in the form of a ceremonial throne, crafted by the distinguished Moscow silversmith Alexei Petrovich Frolov in 1890. This refined object is an outstanding example of the Neo-Russian style of the late nineteenth century, in which the artistic traditions of medieval Russian decorative arts were reinterpreted through the highest standards of Moscow silver craftsmanship.
The architectural composition takes the form of a miniature throne with a high pierced back enriched with geometric and solar motifs, lozenge-shaped panels, openwork decoration and stylised architectural elements inspired by Old Russian wooden architecture, ecclesiastical carving and the ornamentation of royal terems. The symmetrical arrangement of the backrest lends the object an imposing architectural presence despite its intimate scale.
The rectangular salt compartment is fitted with a hinged cover, while the interior retains its original fire-gilding, intended both to protect the silver from corrosion caused by salt and to enhance the luxurious appearance of the piece. The stepped base, with its characteristic architectural profile, recalls the forms of medieval Russian palaces and reinforces the monumentality of the overall design. Finely executed chasing, engraving and delicate openwork demonstrate the exceptional technical skill of Moscow silversmiths during the flourishing of Russian Historicism.
