An impressive designer sideboard executed in the aesthetic language of late Italian Postmodernism. The wooden structure is embellished with multicoloured Murano glass panels arranged in a striking composition of circles, semicircles, arches and rectilinear forms. A vibrant palette of red, blue, green, yellow, pink, white and smoky-grey tones creates a dynamic visual rhythm, transforming the piece into a sculptural work of collectible design.
The façade is composed of two hinged doors enclosing a practical storage compartment. Each glass element is framed within gilt-brass profiles that emphasise the architectural clarity of the composition. The upper section is surmounted by a pale blue glass top, enhancing the interaction of light with the coloured glass surfaces while lending a sense of visual lightness to the overall form.
The geometric arrangement of the façade reveals clear affinities with the visual vocabulary of Victor Vasarely and European Op Art, while retaining the decorative character of Italian Postmodern design of the late twentieth century. The sideboard stands as a compelling synthesis of traditional Murano glass craftsmanship and contemporary artistic design.

The second half of the twentieth century witnessed the flourishing of Italian collectible design, where traditional artisanal techniques became the foundation for bold artistic experimentation. Murano glass, one of the most celebrated symbols of Italian decorative arts, assumed a particularly important role within this creative landscape. By the end of the century, leading designers increasingly incorporated Murano glass not only into decorative objects but also into bespoke furniture, transforming cabinets, sideboards and commodes into fully realised artistic compositions.
This sideboard belongs to a broader group of works inspired by the language of geometric abstraction, which exerted a profound influence on European design during the post-war decades. Its composition demonstrates visual parallels with the work of Victor Vasarely, one of the pioneers of Op Art. The use of saturated colours, contrasting geometric elements and rhythmically organised surfaces creates a sense of visual dynamism characteristic of optical art.
At the same time, the piece reflects the influence of Italian Postmodernism and the Memphis movement founded in Milan by Ettore Sottsass. Designers associated with Memphis sought to challenge the strict functionalism of Modernism, reintroducing decoration, emotion and individuality into furniture design. Geometric forms became an expressive visual language capable of uniting architecture, painting and decorative arts within a single object.
The use of Murano glass contributes exceptional chromatic depth and surface richness. Through the interaction of light with opaque and translucent elements, each section of the façade functions as an individual artistic module while simultaneously contributing to the overall composition. Today, works of this nature are recognised as important examples of Collectible Design and remain highly sought after by collectors of contemporary art and design worldwide.
