WMF is an abbreviation for "Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik".


The founder is Daniel Straub, an entrepreneur from the city of Geilingen in the Kingdom of Württemberg (Germany). Initially owning a small workshop for the repair of metal products, in 1850 he opened a factory "Maschinenfabrik Geislingen" for the manufacture of metal structures and turbines. At the same time, he received a contract for the production of parts for the major construction of the Geislingen Railway. In 1853, Straub decided to join forces with the Schweizer Brothers. Together they formed Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer, where they began to manufacture a variety of silver plated products. In 1880, a merger took place with Straub & Sohn and Ritter & A Co, resulting in the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG (WMF).

In 1886, the Warsaw metal-production company Plewkiewicz & Co is taken over, which since 1900 becomes a WMF branch, intended for production on the Eastern European market, including Russia..
