SCHUTZ-MARKE SYMPHONION. A trademark of the Symphonion company, which began its activity in 1885 and produced the first music box for playing music from discs. Its founders were Oscar Paul Lochmann and two partners: Gustave Brachhausen and Paul Riessner. However, the last two soon left to found Polyphon, which made similar machines and competed with the original firm. In 1889, Symphonion became a limited liability company or Aktiengesellschaft with shares listed on the stock exchange. After the creation of Original Musikwerke Paul Lochmann in 1900, the founding of Symphonion continued under the control of Franz Tyumen and Hans Kanitz until 1909, when it faced financial difficulties and was restructured and the business name changed to Symphonion-Fabrik AG. Under this name, he existed at 13-17b Schkeuditzer Strasse in Gohlis.


Symphonion comes in a huge variety of types, styles and patterns. No other music box for playing discs exists in many varieties. It is possible to find discs of the same diameter, but of different sizes, suitable for two types of mechanisms. The company also pioneered the use of electric motors in disc music boxes. The first model equipped with an electric motor was announced in 1900. The company expanded the business to mechanical pianos, orchestra. Has released both disc and drum mechanisms and phonographs. The last catalog, registered and published in 1912, After the First World War, the business moved to Thuringia.
