A rare decorative object from the early 20th century — a tabletop photograph frame made of metal, shaped like a stylized Russian “terem” or fairytale hut. The piece embodies the aesthetics of the Russian national revival style, featuring elements inspired by traditional wooden architecture: a pitched roof with dragon-shaped finials, pierced ornamentation, and window-frame–like folk motifs. The central circular aperture is bordered with a smooth metal ring, designed to hold a photograph. The lower section includes a decorative frieze with zigzag and geometric patterns reminiscent of carved cornices or towel rails.

At the turn of the 20th century, Russia experienced a cultural revival marked by interest in national heritage and vernacular traditions. The neo-Russian style, as it came to be known, extended beyond architecture and iconography into domestic and decorative objects. These included frames, mirrors, and small furnishings, often produced in artisanal workshops or affiliated with industrial art schools.
Metal frames in the form of huts or “terems” gained popularity as souvenirs and interior accessories, particularly among the urban intelligentsia seeking to reconnect with the “Russian spirit.” Their designs echoed the silhouette and ornament of traditional wooden architecture, with peaked gables, dragon finials, and filigree carving. Inspired by the artistic circles of Abramtsevo and Talashkino — key hubs of the Russian revival — such items were featured at international exhibitions in Paris and Vienna as symbols of refined national craftsmanship.
Today, these objects are valued as historical artefacts reflecting early 20th-century interpretations of “peasant Russia” within the urban decorative imagination.
