This ceremonial sabre of a Finnish naval officer, dating from the second quarter to the mid 20th century, is a distinguished example of Finnish naval dress weaponry. Elegant in proportion and refined in execution, it combines the functional qualities of a service weapon with the prestige of an officer`s ceremonial insignia.
The slightly curved single edged steel blade bears the maker`s mark of E&F Hörster, Solingen, one of the foremost German manufacturers of military and presentation edged weapons during the twentieth century. The hilt is crafted in gilt brass with black ribbed grip scales. The pierced guard is ornamented with the heraldic Lion of Finland, the national emblem of the Finnish state, while the pommel terminates in a finely modelled lion`s head, reinforcing the official and ceremonial character of the weapon.
The stitched leather scabbard is fitted with gilt brass mounts and suspension rings. Restrained decoration, harmonious proportions and fine workmanship identify this sabre as a characteristic example of Finnish naval officers` ceremonial arms of the mid twentieth century.
Marks: Maker`s mark E&F Hörster Solingen on the blade.
