MAHOGANY TABLE WITH MARQUETRY IN THE LOUIS XV STYLE. ATTRIBUTED TO FRANÇOIS LINKE. FRANCE, LATE 19TH CENTURY

An exceptional circular salon table with a single drawer, created in France during the late nineteenth century in the refined Louis XV Revival style. Based on its artistic quality, construction and decorative vocabulary, the piece is attributed to François Linke, one of the most celebrated Parisian cabinetmakers of the Belle Époque.

The carcass is crafted from fine mahogany and veneered with carefully selected bois satiné arranged in an elegant parquetry composition that forms a sophisticated geometric pattern across the circular top. A finely chased brass moulding frames the tabletop, enhancing the harmonious proportions of the design.

The table is distinguished by an outstanding ensemble of finely chased and mercury-gilt bronze mounts. The frieze is enriched with Dionysian ornament incorporating grapevines, acanthus foliage and flowing garlands, executed with remarkable sculptural refinement. The corners are adorned with expressive rams-head mascarons, a decorative motif associated with the finest productions of French cabinetmaking during the second half of the nineteenth century. Gracefully curved cabriole legs terminate in finely cast lions-paw sabots, reinforcing the compositions direct inspiration from the royal furniture of eighteenth-century France.

The exceptional quality of craftsmanship, the remarkable execution of the gilt-bronze mounts, the refined proportions and the sophisticated marquetry firmly place this table among the finest productions of the great Parisian workshops of the Historicist period. Stylistically, the present example closely relates to furniture attributed to François Linke and compares favourably with examples offered by Christies and Sothebys.
