An exceptional decorative composition from the Meiji period, masterfully carved from bone and depicting a traditional Japanese ikebana arrangement. The sculptural composition presents an abundant bouquet of blooming chrysanthemums, flowers and tender shoots gathered around a natural tree trunk that serves as the structural focal point of the composition. The master has rendered with extraordinary precision the delicate modelling of the petals, the texture of the bark, the graceful curvature of the branches and the remarkable vitality of the botanical forms. The dynamic movement of the flowering branches is harmoniously balanced by the stable verticality of the trunk, creating a refined sense of equilibrium characteristic of Japanese decorative art during the Meiji period. Works of this calibre were created by highly accomplished bone carvers for discerning collectors and were intended for both the domestic and international export markets. This composition is an outstanding example of Japanese carved bone craftsmanship from the late nineteenth century.
